Even when they did have catering you didn't get anything for free in first class (other than the occasional hot drink in the morning peaks)

IIRC, it came up in another thread, and LNER will simply copy & paste the situation on their own services as applying to other TOCs - it doesn't differentiate facilities, rather it implies all operators have the full service.
As it is, if it's a long journey, you'd do well to stock up prior to boarding.

London to Portsmouth return. I'm still miffed that I paid for a product that is not as described, it was only when I saw no mention of food on the TOC website that I started to wonder.

Assuming you're travelling in first, prepare to be disappointed by the f-c accommodation on SWR trains too. First class is in small saloons with 2+2 seating.

If you paid for First, I don't believe SWR ever included anything but a hot drink in the morning peak; I'm fairly sure any food items were chargeable.
First isn't really worth it on SWR now tbh as it is all 2+2 except on the 159s, and hardly better than Standard on the 444s. I suppose at least on 450s, First is 2+32 against the 2+3 in Std.

Yes, but it's right on top of the motor bogie....so be prepared for a slightly lively ride, especially if you're at the front or rear of the train!

Yes it is First, mainly due to the drinks I expected to get during the journey. Have never been on those trains so no idea what to expect.

If it says complimentary, you haven't paid for it; it means it's an additional extra you're getting subject to availability, according to LNER and Avanti.
Personal opinion of course but I hate leather seats and find the first class areas feel quite cramped and dingy on the 450's which form the majority of Portsmouth services.
They're declassified on the Windsor lines so anyone can use them but personally I'd rather sit in standard.
Other posters are correct that other than a trial of free hot drinks on some services SWT/SWR have never had a complimentary service in first. It's primarily a commuter operation where first class has always been more about being able to pay to get a seat!
