South West videos

Hey everyone

I have recently started filming at railway stations around the South West of England, as I am from Plymouth and it's in the South West anyway! I wanted to share my videos with you guys and wondered if you could give me some feedback on them and maybe tell me if I need to improve certain aspects of the videos? Thanks for posting - I enjoyed watching as it is an unfamiliar part of the country for me.

You manage to avoid many of the pitfalls for video beginners, but you perhaps could find a way to get more variety of camera position as you are more or less in the same place on the platforms most of the time, though you did use the footbridge some of the time. More distant shots which show the scenery a bit can give a better idea of the location, even in a station.

The main technical point that I noticed could do with a bit of attention is holding the camera steady. Tripods are often discouraged in stations, but a monopod will usually not attract much attention, even just using it folded up as a long handle for more stability will help. Or the no - cost solution is to find something to lean against or rest the camera on - I notice Starcross has lots of lamposts and some railings handy! Most stations will have something.

Thanks! I use my iPhone for filming as it doesn't attract much attention at all and the staff don't mind at all, I try to film away from passengers too so I don't get in their way if they want to board the train.

I appreciate your feedback, the problem I have with keeping the camera still is I suffer from something called Dyspraxia which means I have bad co-ordination when I use my hands and feet in certain situations eg, riding a bike and keeping things still, so at points my video will be a bit shaky but it can't be helped I'm afraid.

I am off to Cornwall tomorrow to film at a station called Bodmin Parkway, so when my video is uploaded I will post it on here.

Oops, sorry about that faux pas - but leaning on something might still help. There are ways to stabilise iPhone movies after you have taken them - some of the apps are free. Might be worth a bit of googling.

There are also hardware stabilisers for phones - even a real Steadicam that started as a joke at a trade exhibition but attracted so many inquiries that it went into production!

The fact that I didn't suspect you were using a phone to film with shows how well you are handling it already - better than I could.
