Then there are the traction motors. GEC507s (some?) of which were re-used from mid 1940s 4-SUBs.

Is the most relevant, nearly all (I think it is actually all) the EE507 traction motors used in the 455s (and various bits of underfloor equipment such as compressors etc) were recovered from withdrawn 405 (4SUB) units and sent to York for reuse in the 455 units.
The traction motors were reworked/ rewound enabling extra field weakening to take place so the units could reach a higher attainable speed. Well over 80 is possible (so I have been told ;)) but I have never been over 75 obviously!

The Southern region used to reuse a lot of their trains in the new builds up to and including complete chassis.

Granted, there is a 456 at Wim, near Wimbledon Park Tube, but it is still in Southern livery (albeit with no Southern logo). When the repaints will happen, and whether they'll get retractioned remains to be seen.

At present we have 12 x456's here at Wimbledon depot, some in the shed, some in top yard and some over by the lathe , and a pair on 6 new road all are in Southern livery with decals removed , the two units in the shed are being used for fiier training while undergoing 'B' exams . There is not and never has been any plan to retraction them to AC , that is for the 455's only.I believe the remaining 456's are at Wabtec for their refurbs , service will begin around mid March on the Guildford-Ascot route with green units initially.

As far as I know, the fastest routes for the 455's are Dorking to Horsham which is 75mph limit. Although near weybridge it might be faster.

4 units at Strawberry Hill. Question is where exactly are the other 20. I was under the belief that 12 were away for refurb. Leaves 8 at the Park not 12...

There are a few services from Guildford to Woking (and on to Waterloo) during the week and all day on Sunday that can reach 75 easily especially if not calling at Worplesdon.

Yes, there are a couple each way on a morning, a few each way on an evening and all day on a Sunday.

It's half-hourly in each direction on a Sunday as the Woking stoppers extend to Guildford, so that's the easiest time to do it. Always seem to get up to a decent speed on Guildford via Cobham services as well after Surbiton, believe the line speed is 70 for much of the route and there is a reasonable distance between some stops. Occasionally get non-stop services when there engineering work on too.

There are a number of services in the morning and evening peaks that run fast between Waterloo and Surbiton formed of 455's which get up to 75. 19:20 from Waterloo is one I can think of, there are lots more too.
