Hi all, just wanted to ask a question reference the position for the Waterloo trainee Train Driver.
I live near Weymouth, so would the job advertised include that area or would a job for Weymouth be advertised as a job for Weymouth.
I ask this as after looking at the south west operating map, the Waterloo line runs all the way down to me and I know you need to live within 45mins of depot, so does in matter what end of the line you live?.
Hope this makes sense as I'm new to it all.
Regards.

From what I'm aware, in the past, you could apply if you could demonstrate that you can relocate to within 45 minutes of Waterloo to do the job, though you'll need to check the job ad for this. Don't bank on being able to get a transfer once you're in, often depots have waiting lists.

The commuting time rule is to reduce the odds of fatigue affecting your performance on the job, the TOCs don't want someone who'll have a SPAD because they're tired by the commute.

Some TOCs class London Terminals differently to other depots, because nobody can reasonably be expected to drive into and park in Central London every day, as such I know some TOCs pay for cabs for start times where a train won't get you in, or have you remote sign on and "pass" in as part of your diagram from another location which has parking and isnt a pain to get to

The depot is where your duties will begin and end, and is effectively your place of work as a driver (irrespective of the destinations you visit in the course of your working day).

Therefore you would need to look for jobs at a depot within the required travelling time mentioned by Economist above.

Waterloo trainee driver means they want a trainee driver at Waterloo and the travel to work time applies.

Do you realise the fastest service from Weymouth to Waterloo is c. 2h45? You wouldn't be able to do many of the early turns or any turn finishing after 930pm at Waterloo. Let's not even think about the fact that the travel to work time and back is 5.5 hours per day before you've got anywhere near a driving cab.

Also, Weymouth has had about 1 trainee driver in the last 5 years approx and they weren't exactly a trainee either.

Thanks for all the replies, this is what I've misunderstood.
I'm guessing jobs around the Weymouth area are rare because of the location.
So in a sense you'd have one person start there shift one end and someone else at the other, both returning to their respective start location at the end.
I thought this would be the case but didn't want to miss applying without asking first.

Yes, generally TOC drivers have a home depot where they are based and that's where they will start their duty by signing on and reading notices etc. Then they'll work their 'diagram' allocated for the day which is a number of different trains. By the end of their 'diagram' they will be back at their home depot by the time they are due to finish. During engineering work getting through and from the depot may involved travelling on a bus or in a taxi to get to the point where they start driving a train, but this is not usually the norm for most regular diagrams .

While Weymouth based drivers do work trains to Waterloo most days, no Waterloo based drivers have worked trains to Weymouth for almost ten years.

I'm not fully conversant with FOC diagrams, but on some focs I believe they work from home or drive vans to trains and relieve the driver who then drives van back.
