Hi there, this is a quick question directed to SWT Drivers. Which depot would you pick out of Wimbledon or Stains if given the choice? And also why?

I'm not a driver but Staines would probably be preferred due to traction and routes in the lower links. Staines would likely have more Desiro and Reading work?

I thought the traction would be the same for both depots, saying that my advice would be the nearest to your home.

I live in Hounslow. Im down for Wimbledown depot but was thinking to ask for Staines as it's just that little bit closer. But dont want to do that if maybe Wimbledon is a better depot. I can imagine its bigger anyway. Are they both Metro?

No brainer. Staines is 20 mins away compared to 45 for Wimbledon. Hopefully they will let you swap depots but as you've been named for Wimbledon that's the one they may end up giving you.

What about Strawberry Hill which is only 3 miles away from Hounslow, its mainly suburban work but the shifts are quite reasonable.

The only vacancies seem to be Waterloo, Staines and Wimbledon at the moment but of course who knows what the future holds come summer with the new franchise. Thanks for the info

I would recommend Wimbledon as it has much greater variety of work/routes. Strawberry and Staines are very limited in terms of the work they do. Also as you progress through the links you'll also have the opportunity to learn Alton and Portsmouth Harbour. For me the variety definitely makes it more rewarding/interesting.

Is it worth the much longer commute (9 miles instead of 3) plus time (people never seem to think of the time they will spend commuting) and several years it will take to climb the links?

I totally agree with this. Commuting around London is a nightmare so go as close to home as possible

I do agree to a certain extent, and of course the commute is something to consider when the job is so tiring as it is. I suppose each person has to strike the balance that is right for them between work satisfaction, and how the commute impacts on their life.
