South pennines day ranger

Firstly, never done a report thing like this before so just seeing if its worth doing for any future adventures i have. Secondaly i dont do unit numbers so its just the class in my description.

Right so here we go, quite a late start. Me and my mate chris decided to do a south pennines day ranger to celebrate finishing exams so combining this with a trip to my home (as in parents home not my student digs) for tea it was to be a good day.

Started with a double 150 from burley park to leeds, a journey i have done so often it is barely worth a mention. This got us to within the ranger area so this is it where it began. After a 15 minute delay waiting for a 333 to clear the line ahead, luckily the intention was to get the 09:11 XC service to wakefield westgate, mainly because it was a HST but also so that we could board the 09:39 northern service to huddersfield, covering a bit of line i had never been on before (kirkgate huddersfield) and hopefully if we were lucky connecting with the 10:13 to sheffield, a 2 minute connection so i wasnt hopefuly especially not after we stopped at a red near horbury junction. As i thought connection not made so we jumped on the 10:16 TPE service to manchester piccadilly on a trusty 185.
One of the main reasons of going towards manchester is my mate had never sampled the virgin pendilinos and we both wanted to do the services out to new mills central and rose hill marple. We sampled the pendilino and he wasn't impressed especially compared to the HST earlier in the day but life goes on. We returned to piccadilly aboard a 323 (another new for him). We then went on to rose hill marple and new mills central on various 142s and an ex London Midland 150. Although there were some delays when the track curcuits failed at ashburys.

That done we decided to head for my house on the 13:43 to norwich unfortunately a single 158 so seats were at premium, getting off at sheffield to head up to chapeltown on a 144. Now at this point i thought it was actually 14:43 we departed so got off at chapeltown to meet my mum, when she dint turn up i rang her only for her to call me a moron for not being able to tell the time. Even the greatest minds fail!

Anyway we then spent the nest 2 hours playing on my newly completed loft model railway (see model railway forum as illl put up a piece probably around easter when im home for longer)

After tea we just took a long route back to leeds. First a 144 to sheffield then a 185 to stockport then a 175 to manchester then a 185 to leeds. Followed by the last train of our day a 155 to burley park finishing at my front door at 22:38.

So explored some new lines which i found quite interesting, i love the little moments when you suddenly come out over a tall viaduct with the river way down below you, really makes a line special to me. Also found the branch to Rose Hill Marple very interesting just because it seemed different to a lot of places you travel to by train.
And also manadged to achieve around 20% punctuality. With only the XC, both chapeltown trains, the EMT service, the virgin service and the last burley park service actually arriving on time to our depature station....


Any comments how to make it better to read as i am useless at long writing.

Pretty good in terms of paragraphing.
The first letter of place names are usually capitalised.
There are a few spelling errors so a good read through is recommended before posting your work online.
One or two instances of an overlong sentence needing dividing into two sentences. A semicolon would perhaps suffice, but not everyone uses these in an informal work such as a blog.
Generally, a nice report and well worth reading.

Manchester is a good place to get in some 142 action - the curve around to Rose Hill Marple is good if you get on the right unit - squeals like hell.

Done the Huddersfield connection before to get onto the Penistone train, although it was delayed at the time due to signalling problems at Barnsley (cable theft more like) so made it with ease. Haven't done a SP Day Ranger in a while, but will have to get down to Yorkshire and get that sorted soon.

Aside from the odd typos here and there, a good report (in some cases a few words are better than many )

Sounds like an interesting day out. As of yet I haven't done an SP Rover but I am hoping to at some stage this year

Always good as well to have something in mind to celebrate finishing exams - me and a friend did something similar after January exams after 2nd and final year, doing a Cheshire and East Midlands rover at the end of the exam period of the respective years (helps in seeing the light at the end of the tunnel - pun kind of intended :P - during the exam weeks )

Sounds like a great day, with plenty of photo opportunities too by the sound of it!.

Its amazing how many miles you can clock up on a day like this, my last trip of note was on a 3 in 7 Heart of England Ranger. Derby to New Street on a 3-car 170, New Street-Hereford also on a 3 car 170, then a 175 up to Ludlow (quick break to see the sights of this place ) followed by a Ludlow-Shrewsbury on another 175.

Was then treated to a twin 158 set from Shrewsbury to Brum & then the regulation 170 back to Derby.

I think that cost me around £20 for that day, (being £60 ish for a 3-day ticket!?) A good day whatever & pence per mile was most definately better than £10 taxi from Derby Station to my house (4 miles away)

Definitely - one of the last trips I went on last year was to meet family in Ilkley, but using the Family West Yorkshire Rover ticket, we went via Wakefield Kirkgate (don't ask what possessed this idea!) and back, out to Ilkley and then back via Bradford Forster Square, Bradford Interchange and a quick jaunt down to Wakefield Westgate, and back via HST before heading home. Adding it up, it came to over 100 miles total which surprised me. Given that we had the Family ticket and there was two of us, it probably came to about 4-5p a mile, which isn't bad going for an impromptu afternoon out

Yes i did love the curve into Rose Hill Marple was very good enjoyed that!

Ill be honest i should of probably not posted it at 2:16 AM after doing athe ranger... i was knackered and also had to be up for KWVR very early next morning. The overlong sentances, should any of you ever meet me, is unfortunately how i talk.... hence why it comes across in my writing i tend not to stop once i start

Most long pieces i put on here are put through some software i have before posting but this one i didn't. Note to self next time try and do it the next day


Its a ranger i personally think is well worth while.
