Background
In NYC, the last stop of the (1) train is South Ferry. There's a island platform and two tracks. But prior to that, there used to be a loop station at the stop. Opening in 1905 as part of the first subway extension into Brooklyn, the Outer Loop served passengers for well over a century. As time passed, a variety of services terminated there. In the 1970's, trains from the (6) line terminated at that stop during rush hour. There was also a Inner Loop as well that served a shuttle from the Ferry to Bowling Green (which closed when the shuttle ended in 1977). Many of the services that happened in the 70's ended afterwards, and it was served by the (1) train from that point on. It continued on serving passengers until the late-2000's. After the 9/11 attacks, the MTA decided that a brand new station be needed to help Lower Manhattan in the long run. The new station was completed in 2009, and the Outer Loop was closed. However, Hurricane Sandy in 2012 devastated the new station, and the Outer Loop was re-opened in 2013 before shuttering again just last year once that repair work to the new station was complete.
My Use of the Station
I've used the station throughout my childhood whenever I went down to lower Manhattan with family members and my uncle during middle school. The trains would roll in with a loud screech. When it came to a stop, the gap fillers would adjust right with the doors, and they'd open. People would run to the train to catch it while walking from the entrance in the front. When the doors closed, the gap fillers backed away from the doors, and the train would make a slow departure from the stop before speeding up a-bit while leaving the station. I was lucky to experience it again just a few years ago before it closed.
