Train Operating Companies usually issue a letter within 2 to 3 weeks depending upon the volume of enquiries they are undertaking. It will also be influenced by the time taken to receive responses from any ticket retailers they have contacted to ask for your online booking records.

I am sorry I do not know what the envelope looks like but I would imagine a DL envelope or C4 envelope in white with a return address on the back. That address would almost certainly give some indication of the envelopes contents.

The letter will almost certainly ask for your comments as to the incident when you were stopped plus may also ask you to comment on any other occasions where the booking record would appear to indicate that you had not paid the correct fare. The Train Operating Company will then decide whether to offer an out of court settlement (the full single fare for each and every journey where the correct fare was not paid with no credit for the fares already paid plus an admin fee of C£100 - £200) or to proceed to court. It is in their interests (and yours) for it to be settled by an out of court settlement. If you engage and are truthful then an out of court settlement is usually offered.

Were you given any paperwork at the time? If so please upload here with any personal details and reference number obscured.

The forum does not suggest emailing SWR because it is highly unlikely they would be able to match your email to a live investigation unless you had some reference number to enable it to be matched. One of their emails is prosecutions@swrailway.com but as explained above there is no guarantee this would achieve the objective.

Which company was it: you say SWR (South Western Railway) in the title, but you mention Sevenoaks, which is a South Eastern Railway station?

I would think that the only thing to do is to arrange to have any official looking envelope sent on.

On the day I got caught they gave me a receipt type thing, stating the case number and the officers badge number and just some other information. Is this useful to post?

Also do you know how long after they said the initial letter that I have to reply before they may take the case further and press charges as I'm worried of missing the letter being at uni

It may help the experts if you post an image of the slip of paper that you received in this thread. Please obscure your name, address and any other identifying details, such as reference numbers.

Welcome to the forum!

The letter will be addressed to you by name, so you should get your dad to look out for any letter addressed to you. From the sounds of it I bet you rarely get post addressed to you!

It is very important that you reply to the letter. Southeastern will usually offer an out of court settlement to people who co-operate with their investigation and who haven't coe to their attention before. Expect to have to pay the cost of the fares avoided at the full Anytime rate with no credit given for the invalid tickets you did purchase. In addition you will need to pay an admin fee, typically around £150. You will need to be in a position to pay the settlement in full within a few days of it being offered.

When it comes, feel free to post a copy of your draft reply to the letter and forum members will proof read it for you.
