South Eastern Advance Fares

Does this train operator actually have any advance fares?

I can find little mention of it on their website.

Need to travel from Haddenham and Thame Parkway to Westenhanger on the 5th March and the cheapest it finds is an off peak single, which isn't very good value.

Anyone familiar with the tricks of the south east fares? The on the day single costs more than my first class advance single all the way back to Taunton!

Southeastern simply don't do Advance Fares.

Cheapest standard return fares I could find are £34.70/£48.10.

£34.60 is the cheapest day single I can find, route any permitted and restriction CH. Probably somewhere to split, but someone else should know!

Had an idea. Advance fares seem to come up if you incorporate the journey with certain First Great Western tickets - e.g. Bath Spa to Westenhanger is £8.90 advance single. From experience, these usually only specify the advance time for the FGW train, so in theory I can catch any SE train.

That's the London - Westenhanger leg, and there are advance fares with Chiltern for the first bit.

What a farce the fare system in this country is.

The 395s are fitted with seat reservation displays, so in theory they could do advance fares on high-speed routes, but at the moment SET, like most other former NSE TOCs have no advance fares.

Yes it's a farce, but many of the farces can be used in our favour, so I'd rather keep the current system rather than let TOCs do their own thing and abolish through tickets.

I think you'll find that the plan is to abolish the majority of cross London Advances later this year!

Ohh dear, I hope not, as they're the only reason I really use the the train for long distance travelling, otherwise it's just too expensive

I went from Harpenden to Westenhanger last year and found it was (from memory) about £8 cheaper to book Harpenden to Ashford and then Ashford to Westenhanger, despite the fact that I have a Network Card which has a minimum fare rule and so there was no discount on the Ashford - Westenhanger ticket.

The cheapest I can find is £8.25 (railcard) from Chippenham to Westenhanger, and £6.60 (railcard) Haddenham to London.

Can anyone beat that?

One thing that I've always wondered is whether the Chippenham - Westenhanger ticket will operate the tube barrier at Marylebone or whether you would have to walk from Marylebone to Paddington to catch the tube there.
