It actually uses a mix of left and right hand running I think unless it's changed.
Crianlarich was LHS last time I was there, long after RETB came in.

The only WHL crossing loops with right-hand running are Garelochhead, Ardlui, Bridge of Orchy, Rannoch, Spean Bridge and Taynuilt. There's also Muir of Ord on the Far North Line RETB system.

Back several years ago I was on a train that ran wrong line. I can't recall if a local set, HST ( definitely before the IET's appeared ), or an XC Voyager.

Generally, but not always, it's the locals that run wrong line as it has a lower speed limit.

There's a famous video on YouTube of a down XC HST using the up line to overtake a down FGW HST, which had presumably had an extended dwell to set down passengers for the Dawlish Airshow.

I think there is another video of a similar occurrence, but this time not during the airshow and I think both trains don't stop...? I'll have to dig it out.

Generally I've found the opposite, as by keeping the local on its booked line saves having to platform alter the passengers at Dawlish and Teignmouth. The speed differential isn't much, but having to cross back to the down line at Teignmouth costs some time, so definitely the down is better for the fast, but generally I find its the local that keeps the down line, though not always.

Another place where wrong line running happens is at Westerleigh Junction. It's usually to allow a late running XC to overtake a local stopper.
