Sources for planned formation?

Could anyone advise a website source for the planned formation (type/ number of carriages) of trains? I know that e.g. Real Time Trains provide the actual formation but I’d like to understand when talking about services being ‘short formed’ (often the case on TPE currently) what I should be comparing against.

I think the best bet here would be the TOC's 'JourneyCheck' system, if they offer one. While not all of the official short-forms are published, under 'train formation updates', it should clearly state (e.g., with the TPE 185s) if a train has been formed of 3 coaches instead of 6.

TPE has: www.journeycheck.com/tpe
and other TOCs including XC, GWR, TfW and Northern use this system. Others have their own or use a website, such as LNWR.

Southeastern has a bit on train formations under service Disruption. Very handy for finding out what type of train is running a service.

Ok thanks, so to confirm there’s no public listing of what formations should be, just notifications of when they’ve changed from that? Seems like placing a lot of trust in the TOCS

I don't know where the data come from, but I use an App, "Live trains", which tells me the lengths of most trains - on GTR, anyway
