Sorting Overhead Line Equipment storm issues

As all that happens when we get a storm is for one reason or other the OLE is damaged is not time to go to a train which has self contained power?

We could do diesel, no problem going forward as Trump will personally supply us with as much diesel as we like, subject to us not importing anything back to US.

Or even better we could open up our coal mines, those with huge reserves, and refurbish all those preserved locos that the heritage movement cannot afford to refurbish. We could also supply the heritage movement with coal which has been transported a much shorter distance.

I am sure all the other countries will be too busy worrying about Trump withdrawing from everything to notice our slight increase in green house gases.

Why not erect a continuous concrete canopy 4.5m above all electrified lines, and replace the OLE with a solid copper bar bolted to the ceiling? Saves the hassle of maintaining knitting as well, and you could put earth on top of the canopy and plant trees on it to make it green.

The cheapo version omits the canopy and just puts the conductive bar on the ground instead.

Most sensible advanced countries have electrically powered railways. Perhaps we should figure out what they do differently?

If there’s been a storm that’s powerful enough to damage OHLE, the knitting won’t be the only thing getting damaged and stopping the job.

It’s back to costs that DaFT etc. don’t want, resilience, contingency, flexibility, etc..

Central London trams used to use conduits.

Though 25kV, rainwater and sleepers might make it a little challenging on the main line.

And noisy.

But it would never blow away!
