Sony Xperia Z Series - Problems?

I've currently got a Sony Xperia Z2 and has developed a massive spider crack in the middle of the screen. I had my phone on charge and lifted it up and felt it was extremely hot and then heard it crack.

Before I go to Sony to ask for advice and then quote all sorts of regulations (Sale of Goods Act, Distance Selling Regulations), just curious if anyone has had any problems with the devices in the series?

I've a Z1 and ever since the Lollypop upgrade I've had problems with the battery. It's been saying 0% remaining when the charge has anywhere between 70-93% remaining (even after a full charge). I've even done a complete system reset and that hasn't worked!

Sounds like a thermal shock, on account of the chipset getting very hot at times - often shutting down the camera as I had only today on my Z3 (same chipset more or less).

The problem is that the handset design makes it hard for the phone to dissipate heat, which means I'd be considering the 'fit for purpose' argument to try and get a repair. You might face a bit of a battle though, but there are countless stories online of people suffering heat related issues with the Xperia flagships (using Snapdragon 801 and now 810 which is even worse).

Other devices have similar heat problems, but can often cope better by being made of different materials.

I've just noticed that it's also got a nice crack on the other side where the NFC logo is.

It's only been this bad ever since I updated the OS to Lollipop. Yeah I know Which? magazine is still running an article on their website regarding the Z series, and from what I can see people have been having nothing but trouble with Sony in relation to this.

What makes it worse is that the crack on the front has rendered that digitizer useless as well, and I can hardly use the touchscreen either...

Android 5 has had a range of problems, mostly relating to memory leaks. 5.0.2 is one such version, and it's only really 5.1.1 that should have solved everything.

It has been a pretty awful rollout for Google in general, but the problems with 5.0, 5.0.1, 5.0.2 and 5.1 has been a nightmare for the manufacturers too.

Yeah my phone just hasn't been right at all since I put 5.0.2 on it. Looks like it's going to be an interesting call to Sony on Monday morning...

I used to have a Sony Experia Z1 and having sent it to Sony three times to fix a fault which still hasn't been fixed, I brought myself a Lumia 640XL needless to say I'm surprised I didn't go for it sooner as not only is it far more responsive but it's just as if not easier to use.

I still have my Z1 but it's been put to one side for the time being.

Yes, overheating and cracking are a known issue on the Xperia Z series, at least up to and including Z2 (I believe the issue is reduced or solved in the Z3 series). If you Google you see quite a lot on the issue.

Lollipop has many battery issues. My Z3 Compact has gone from a 2-day battery life (if used sparingly) to just over 1 day if used sparingly, and under a day if used liberally. Very disappointed, and if Google don't fix it soon I may well look to flash an older ROM onto it to put it back to Kit Kat so it works properly.

I have also noticed my Z3 running quite hot, which is probably what is causing the battery depletion. No cracks though.
