Somewhere to watch, in Huddersfield

Does anyone know of a good, safe and legal spot to view trains that's within walking distance of Huddersfield station?

I'm not exactly a train spotter but occasionally theres something more interesting than a 144 coming through - a 60 with some flats, or last night there was a 31 on a NR Test Train - that I go see out of pure inquisitivity and as far as I can tell you can either stand on tiptoes to peer over the wall above the tunnel, on Trinity Street, or you can stand on the steep bit of Fitzwilliam Street, but neither is a great position, the latter making you look rather shady by standing around for ages.

The tunnels on the approach from the Colne Valley and the viaduct away on the Leeds side make it difficult. Can you not get the view you want from the car park on the platform 8 side of the station or even from the station car park by the old Kirkburton bay end of the station. Or why not actually on the station itself, not sure if platform tickets are available but a return to/ from Lockwood,with a railcard, is £1-40p

If you can get to Deighton, then there's a good spot on the old railway bridge. If you don't mind a bit of a walk or can find a bus, continue down the old railway line and you can get up on the embankment just where the line from Brighouse trails in.

There's the footbridge over the Penistone line at Springwood Junction, which has good views of the lines to Sheffield and to Manchester... Though the down TPE line might be obscured by the "nature reserve" in the six-foot! Like most footbridges, better views are found from just off the bridge due to the high iron side walls. The footbridge off Lowergate between Paddock and Milnsbridge is similar, but does have good views from the sides.
