Some info on FGW 180's

hi there everyone.

I don't know if there is a tread already on this so sorry if there is.

Just need to know, when first introduced by FGW what routes were the 180's supposed to be sticking too. Also what routes do the run on now and are they always running in 10 formation.

Does anyone know the coach formation for the 180's. Eg A-B-C etc and what coach is the First class, Shop, and Quiet zone please.


Also while on the subject of the FGW whats happening with the HST's at the moment. I see from FGW diagrams that some services are diagramed for 2+8 high density and 2+8 low density. There are also 2+7 low density. On the 7 coach sets are they just basically running without a "normal" buffet car on them.

FGW dont have any left. fHT, GC, NT (NXEC) have them all I think The were used on Hereford.

thought I would start this thread to keep track of where the 180s are! TOCs in brackets indicates that the unit is for that TOC but not yet in service.

They were originally used for the London - Cardiff (now HST), along with some runs on the Cotswolds and Exeter semi fast services.

B Standard
C Standard (with buffet(?))
D First
E Standard

I found some old diagrams, so what was the thinking behind having 1st class NOT at the front or very back of the train. Seems a little daft to me.

Whats happening with FGW buffets, there are diagrams for 2+8 high density sets and 2+8 low density sets. Whats the differnace. Also do the 7 coach sets have no buffet in at all.

All sets will soon have a buffet, albeit some with a mini buffet in coach E.

Low Density have 4 tables per coach, High density 2.

2+7 sets are mainly for the Oxford diagrams as the journey is too short to justify a buffet coach.
Having one less coach also saves about 35 tonnes trailing weight, with slight acceleration improvements.

I agree with the Oxford service not needing a buffet on them. However the 2+7 don't stick to the Oxford services. One does a Plymouth - Paddington (early morning), and others also do Cheltenham, Wocester, Exeter, Weston. I've got the diagrams for them.

Really think that FGW would be better keeping the 180's their a good train, would be fine on the Oxford services and the Bedwyn come to that.

Those diagrams aren't correct.

The 0600 Plymouth - Paddington has a travelling chef, so needs a buffet.
