My normal commute is Stevenage to King's Cross and on any given trip you'll normally see a 66 in Ferme Park and the 67 Thunderbird at King's Cross. Of course, during the year you'll see all sorts and over 20 years I have seen it all.

However, every once in a while something quite special will happen.

My journey this morning (5/8 07.59 SVG)...uneventful until Ferme Park and then, what's this, about 4 * 66s. And then a 20. No, wait. OMG 2 pairs of 20s. Pretty rare stuff in these parts.

I'm still delighting at my '8-loco-commutte' as we arrive at King's Cross. Then I see the Thunderbird. Unusually it's one of the 'Queen's'. A rare(ish) treat. But then wait. There's only a DRS 37 stabled too. WOW - Can't remember the last time I saw one of those here. WTF - An AC loco (not sure if 87 or 86) at the head of the late running 08.18 charter to Edinburgh.

Digesting all I'd seen in <10 mins guess what was at the rear of the AC stock> Yes, a 33.

It's been a long time since I was a 'spotter' but even I haven't seen such a rare variety for a very long time.

I get the same train! Didn't notice Ferme Park as I was messing on with my phone in true commuter style. But the 37 in King's Cross was a nice sight. I'll have to look out of the window on the way home to see what's still there!

They were both there on Saturday, if that helps, but I didn't think anything of it at the time, particularly in view of all the railtours that seem to be running over summer weekends.

Good have been never? I mean, 86s are West Coast units, only 89, 90 and 91 I think have served Kings Cross (unless better informed members than myself can correct me). 33s were South Coast based, whilst they did go further North, I think it may only have been in a freight capacity. 37s you probably would have seen though, they found themselves all over the place (although I think still not that much on the East Coast).

86s worked on Hull Trains services a few years ago. 87s have hauled railtours out of the Cross. 33s were the mainstay of the Welsh Marches line from Cardiff to Crewe for many years.

37s used to work into KX back in green days and later used to turn up from time to time on Cambridge services. 86101 worked the Hull Trains service a few years ago, but 33s at the Cross are as rare as the proverbial rocking horse manure. Railtours only as far as I am aware.

37667, it brought the Northern Belle to Kings Cross (from Crewe) on Saturday, and after that did a railtour to Leuchars, took the stock back to Crewe.

It isn't that unusual to get a 66 or 67 doing this when there are not enough class 90s at the London end (or one has failed)

Rail express systems 86/2s and 86/4s were often used to haul railtours to and from kings cross back in the early 2000s
