There was disruption this morning due to a track defect at Crews Hill, so obviously there were going to be some cancellations and delays so with the very limited information that was available I made a announcement advising passengers of what exactly was going on and their alternatives which was available only for some passenger to walk in and complain they couldn't hear anything as the driver wanted to recharge their batteries on the train they were working - what had happened is I was half way though the announcement and the cursed compressor decided it was going to make as loud a racket as humanly possible.

I had the opposite happen to me, i was sitting in first and when the guard came round to check all the tickets I was the only one with a 1st ticket so he asked me if I wanted everyone out! I politely declined the offer!

I've been on short formed trains where the driver has declassified the first class section

A driver can't declassify the first class on FCC...believe me I know! Other companies, not sure, but if they are DOO the driver still has no say on classification ruling
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
People already upgrade themselves, even when there ARE seats in standard but it might mean sitting next to someone else. Once, I - stupidly - got involved in an argument between an RPI and passenger. I know I shouldn't, and I probably hadn't helped the RPI as it inflamed the situation slightly (I was, quite rightly, told that it was none of my business) - but I couldn't resist jumping in to point out to the passenger, that said that there were no seats, that there were in fact seats throughout the train (I'd walked through) and especially at the 'country' end. There were probably at least 5-10 seats in each carriage, but I guess if he'd wanted four seats to himself with a table then perhaps he did deserve to go in first class!

People on their own should not occupy 4 seater berths with tables when its a busy train..its just selfish and ignorant.Sounds like he deserved a punch more than first class!

Were the passengers on drugs or something? The driver wanted to recharge their batteries?I know the company wants robots but I havent had to charge myself !

Well, the services run as 313s in 6-car formation from King's Cross will not have first class, so if it's shortformed then it's already declassified - and so it's not a case of the driver actually declassifying it, just informing people of the fact.

However, I'm sure that I've been on a service that did have first class but was down from 8 to 4 cars, and perhaps the driver got permission or was told by control - but either way, we were informed that it was okay to use first class. This was at King's Cross for what it's worth.

Come to think of it, the second example has probably only happened once or twice in a number of years.

Personally, I like it when a declassified service is kept secret!!

I can assure you that drivers are NEVER informed of declassification..ever..its just a passenger myth that came from"first class doesnt apply on sundays"

As for unit substitutes..I dont believe that entitles you to first class if standard is empty...again,not sure!

From my understanding, if a train with first class is put on a working which is usually standard class ony then it is declassified which is why you can have first class on the stoppers and have it declassified, the only time it would declassified on a semi fast/express working would be if it was dangerous overcrowded and then it would be the decision of the control or a manager to put that into effect.

Not too sure I can agree with that. I always book a table seat on VT services and during the peaks it is unusual for the other three seats not to be occupied. You have to bear in mind that IMO a lot of people travelling in the peaks are individuals, it is not selfish and arrogant at all to want a table seat (especially laptop users who want a plug)

But they get the same thing for free. So you have almost wasted £75. Anything else is irrelevant? Crap

Don't know if you know this but people pay many various amounts to sit in First Class for the same journey and the same benefits, so the point is relevant.

No, it isn't, because you have all paid for the ticket allowing you to do so, but because someone might have to stand up they should go to first class. Idiotic idea:roll:

I've never heard the 'first class doesn't apply on Sunday' thing before!

As you're a GN driver, I can say that the service in the morning that form the 0818, 0846, 0902 and 0943 from Hatfield are all declassified. They'll be 4 or 8-car in most cases. There are others, booked as 6-car, which could be changed and thus allow you to sit in first class.

In the evening peaks from King's Cross, the xx27 and xx57 will usually be a 6-car 313 (there's one specifically booked as 4-car though), but sometimes they are substituted for a 4-car 317 or 365 - for whatever reason (you'd know more than me!). In these cases, there's NO first class on that service. Now if a driver, RPI or platform staff don't want to tell people then so be it (good for me!) but it WILL be declassified!

I don't remember when it was (over a year ago), but FCC did try putting up signs to say that the first class section was declassified - but I guess it was a nightmare. Who puts them up, who takes then down etc.

I think the plan is to get more 313s and add more services in and out of Moorgate, with 321s replacing the 313s from King's Cross - which will either mean every service offering first class, or FCC being able to reintroduce first class operation on them at all times (which will be bad for me!!).

Of course it's fine to take a table! I think it's a bit different if someone takes a table and then tries to put others off by spreading stuff around - coats and bags on the other three seats.

THAT is selfish, but totally different.

I'll agree with that, despite peak trains being busy you always get the odd few whose bags take the window seat while they have the isle seat

Happened to me a few weeks ago where a guy had put his rucksack on my reserved seat (clearly marked on the 390 seat status screen) while he sat in the isle seat. So I asked him to move his bag - the look was priceless and he moved seats completely :D

I've seen this a lot. Presumably the people who do it think there's less chance of soemone asking them to move their bags if they sit on the outside - it gives the impression that soemone has gone to the toilet or to the buffet (if there is one!).

These tend to be the people I ask first...

I do this sometimes, not to hide a seat (and I don't put a bag on it), but just so that if someone comes along, I still get to sit in the aisle seat.

Of course, if you came and asked me, I'd probably have seen you approaching and already begun to move!

Even though there are plenty of other perfectly good seats?

What a self-righteous prick you must be!

If that's what you wish to think, carry on...I'd rather be a SRP than an arrogant, selfish bar steward, like the people in question!

Just for the record, I don;t have a problem with people who move their stuff when they see people getting on, or catch people's eye and offer the empty seat to them, it's the people who shuffle in their seat and avoid eye contact, as if they are pretending not to notice the train is full and they are taking up two seats, that I detest.

What annoys me is when people sit next to me when there are plenty of empty seats. i was sitting on a 2 seat when a lady sat next to me so I moved to the empty 2 seat in front!!

Crikey there really are some anti-social people out there aren't there. What is the issue with someone sitting next to you? This isn't the 18th century you know

I don't mind that so much, but what makes me paranoid is if I'm on the tube or bus, there's an empty seat next to me and people woudl rather stand!

Just regarding buggies and space on train etc, I always thought there was a byelaw stating buggies must be folded before entering a train, I could be wrong but without checking I am sure I have read something on the lines...

Is there some unwritten rule that says that people must take up one of an empty pair of seats first? What if you're only going one or two stops and just want to hop on and sit in the nearest available seat to the door? Is it really worth traipsing down the carriage, possibly with a bag or bags, for a five or six minute trip?

I'd much rather people asked first rather than just plonking themselves down next to me.

Yes, I agree, it's polite to ask if the seat is taken, even if there's no belongings on it.

I have to agree there, it is only polite to ask. In a similar way, I personally enjoy indulging occasionally in a certain sort of breakfast muffin and hash brown combination at a certain well-known fast food chain. The particular establishment I tend to use is often quite busy at the relevant time in the morning, and I sometimes therefore end up having to take a four-seat table because all of the single seat and two-seat places are occupied. Frequently in such situation other singletons and/or couples will ask if anyone else is sitting there and I will reply that I'm alone and invite them to use the vacant seats if they wish. I consider this both polite and friendly. It's also led to some very interesting and entertaining conversations over the years! ;)

I'm going to take a guess at saying you don't have kids, only someone without a child would think that a reasonable byelaw. What do you suppose happens if your child is asleep or if you have a fair amount of stuff in the buggy's storage areas. It would be a most unfair rule, especially considering that some prams do not fold up anyway.

On my local buses there is a area specifically for a wheelchair passenger which can be used by buggies if not required by a wheelchair passenger however some parents seem to think they have a god given right to use that area, if a wheelchair passenger needs to use that area then the buggies must be fold up or get the next bus.

I'm not against buggies but sometimes common sense has to come into play particularly when most buses in my area being single deckers only have spaces for 3 normal type buggies and not the large land rover type ones.

I don't have kids of my own yet but I've travelled with my family with buggies and it's not easy.

As to the byelaws, there's nothing in them which say buggies must be folded before boarding.

I was called a jobsworth today by a passenger whome the given situation was nothing to do with. I love it when people get involved in things that are of no concern to them. And for everyones information i had seen my colleague (who i was assisting) check a passengers ticket - it was a childs ticket but i had heard the said passenger say they were 17 - i asked to see her ticket again befor dealing with her (she admitted she was 17 and on a childs ticket for the record). Why did this person decide he needed to get involved???????

That's not really the same thing. The car is unlikely to have nipped to the toilet, leaving it's travelling companion to look after it's space...

Quite correct, if we were all more polite the world would be a much friendlier place!

. . . .
Why did this person decide he needed to get involved???????
This gives me the opportunity to link these two points with a little incident this week.
I was the only person at a table of four (and I had NOT put, nor left, any detritus on the other seats!).
All other seats in the carriage were occupied.
There were several passengers standing in the vestibules at either end, one of them carrying an infant.
(And yes, I had taken a shower that morning!!!)
I did consider getting up and telling some of them that there were three seats available, but hesitated (thinking that they might at least look for themselves). Then the guard came along doing a ticket inspection - he had just had a nasty ticket to issue so was stressed and likely to fail to complete the inspection of "my" carriage before having a PA announcement to make. But we recognise each other so I had no hesitation "in getting involved" and I pointed out that none of the other 3 seats at the table were going to be taken under the reservations. Nevertheless, his reply was along the lines : "there plenty seats at the front - if they want to stand . . . . "

So I remained alone at a table of four for another hour or so and people stood in the vestibules for another hour or so. And my "getting involved" didn't help anyone!
