Does anyone know if there are advance tickets for Bank Holidays? I intend to travel on VT from Euston to New St with a cheap first class advance around noon.

However, the date is 24th April which is Easter Sunday. I checked the VT site and while the calendar shows that advance tickets are available there are none free to book (despite the 26th being available)

Might be due to engineering work and the timings of trains not being finalised yet.

Indeed, I got an advance ticket in the opposite direction on the 23rd. I was wondering for a while but then remembered if it was due to Easter Sunday.

If necessary I'll just get an off peak chiltern lol

They show for me on London Midland, probably the reservation computer was down.

Really, for April 24th? The LM site only has off-peak singles from my end

It is probably just simply the case that Virgin have not released their Advance tickets for the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend yet. A number of TOCs are regularly later releasing tickets for Bank Holidays and weekends than they are for midweek.

I have also been waiting to book a ticket from Nottingham to London on Monday 25th April (Easter Monday), but EMT have not released their tickets for Fri, Sat, Sun and Mon of that weekend despite having released tickets for the following day Tues 26th April. EMT regularly do not release their weekend tickets until a good few weeks after the weekday tickets have been on sale.

East Coast released their AP tickets on Thursday and are now selling them right through until Saturday 30th April including all weekends and bank holidays. I find that this is usually the case with East Coast.
Therefore I have now booked a Nottingham to Kings Cross (changing at Peterborough) AP ticket for 25th April for only £9.95. Much cheaper than I would ever get by waiting for EMT to sell their tickets! I always end up tavelling to and from Nottingham to London at weekends and bank holidays with East Coast simply because they release their tickets first. I've made the mistake in the past of waiting weeks for EMT to release theirs only to find myself paying more than twice the price I could have got with East Coast.
EMT miss out because they don't release their tickets earlier!

I will probably end up travelling with East Coast for my return journey on May Day for the same reason.

To travel from Manchester to London on the Sunday before the August Bank Holiday, I may take the ECML into account. If there is engineering works affecting Virgin Trains, or London Midland from Stoke-on-Trent to Euston, it could be worth looking at changing at Doncaster or Grantham and then using East Coast Trains from there. It may be cheaper to fly to Heathrow though!

I have thought of changing at Birmingham onto Chiltern Rail but it seems their £5 singles to Marylebone are Mon-Fri only.

It's actually cheaper for me to change at Peterborough at the moment :o

I've just sent an email to Virgin asking about it so I'll see

Dear SS4*

Thank you for your recent email.

We would like to inform you, the cheap advance purchase tickets for the mentioned journey are yet to be released. These tickets are released by the Train Operating Companies 6 to 8 weeks in advance.

Please check our website on a regular basis and as soon as they become available, please book them as these tickets are released in a limited number and are in high in demand.

If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind regards

In other words wait and see which I'm happy enough to do given that I could get a First Class single for £14.50!

It is about £10 to travel via Peterborough but if I cannot get a cheap one then I'll just go off peak with Chiltern for £12 to save time

Looking at the Chiltern "Changes to Train Times" calendar, there's major engineering work planned from the 22nd of April to the 8th of May, though it doesn't have any details beyond that yet. I'll have to see what the Engineering Circular says (if anything) when I get to work.

Cheers,

Barry

Thank you for the offer although it's largely academic now (see below)

If anyone is interested Virgin have put their Advance tickets on sale for the 24th now, I snapped a Advance First for £14.50 (with railcard)
