Hi Guys

Family are travelling to mine in Woking as they are going to a musical in London on Saturday 7th September, returning Sunday 8th September. Journey planned so far is:

Saturday 8th September

10:24 Solihull -> London Marylebone £6 Advance
Zone 1 -> Woking Anytime Day Single £13.40

Sunday 9th September

16:33 Marylebone -> Solihull £6 Advance
Woking -> Zone 1 Anytime Day Single £13.40

I'm wondering if anyone knows a period return for a station just north of Euston or similar to bring the cost of the Anytime Day Singles down?

Many thanks

No railcard or oyster card.

No railcard or oyster card.

Nothing cheaper I'm afraid, the next station along (Worplesdon) has open returns but that makes it £27.40 so the Woking singles are still cheaper!

The only saving I can suggest is buy the ticket as Woking to Finsbury Park, which allows cross london transfer to Marylebone! This then costs £13.10, saving 30p off the Underground singles you found before.

An East Dulwich - Woking Anytime Single, route Any Permitted, has a Maltese Cross for a cross-London transfer and costs £11.10.

I don't believe the maltese cross allows any cross-London transfer, only one relevant to the journey on the ticket. However, it will operate the gates for any cross-London transfer.

As such, I would buy a ticket Woking - Queens Park London £13.50 or Woking to Wembley Stadium £14.10.

Those both cost more than the OP's proposed U12 Zone tickets though so there's no gain to the OP in using them!

As for the point about "any", maltese cross tickets to Finsbury Park will definitely allow the passenger out at Marylebone. Tried and tested ;)

Acceptance by gates does not determine validity!

Indeed that is true, the OP can only take my word for it and try it at their own risk.

Ideally the two passengers should get Oyster cards as this journey would be cheaper without the added Underground premium added to it, I guess it's even possible to do Marylebone to Surbiton @ £4.90 using Oyster card and then £6.10 for Surbiton to Woking SDS. This is more hassle because of the need to get off the train at Surbiton to touch out, but it brings the cost down to £11 each/way plus the £6 Advances each/way.
