Apart from the race issue here, it is glaring example of someone being completley out of order and getting his come uppance for it. The words, roles, social classes, races and possible reasons fade into ingnificance compared to the fact it's not on to get nasty and have a personal dig at someone else in public and for that if nothing else, he gets no sympathy from me.
.
The papers are saying he's 47. What do you lot reckon about that ? Does he look it ? Older, younger, about right ?

I'd say he looks old enough to know better. Also, older than 47. Apart from his reprehensible actions, those braces should be a chargeable offence.

So much as I do not agree with racism, and we can only go with what the report says, it sounds typical:

a. child doing something wrong
b. person's says something
c. parent then rather then accept responsibility try to turn it on the person making the complaint and gets offended by the way it was said
d. then as we see here it snow balls from there

Had the behavior been prevented in the first place or the parent's respond a non defensive one then this could have been avoided.

Really? A solicitor swigging wine from a bottle, obviously drunk and being offensive to a fellow passenger in a First Class coach, as opposed to a mother and a small child travelling in the same coach having to endure the abuse from a drunken hooray henry? Sorry guy, you seem to be trying to justify this idiots behaviour. His behaviour is unacceptable, end of.

Does your 'sounds typical' scenario also allow for a drunk middle-aged solicitor being present as a routine event too ?

A quick look at the website of the Law Society of Scotland shows that solicitors are expected to act with 'personal integrity' at all times, even in the context of a private citizen.

I am fairly certain the regulator will want to have a chat about this conviction

I know plenty of middle aged solicitors. Some drunken. None have been convicted of a criminal offence ;)

Brilliant - blame the victim and call this 'typical'. Ill pass that onto my missus who doesnt go a week without being racially abused both at work and on the street and let her know that the drunks on her trains are not responsible for their behaviour or as is the case with that J bloke earlier Ill tell her its freedom of speach when she comes home in floods of tears simply because of the colour of her skin. And not the first time you have said something like this either, from memory as the post got deleted. However Ill screen shot this one so no one ever forgets.

If he is 47 he had a rough paper round. I am 42 and don't look like Senator Palpatine.

Typical what? Someones kid acts up (Which I don't recall reading happened) so you blame it on their race? Yeah, nothing to see here, white people don't give birth to ignorant or annoying kids.

They probably also believe in Schrödinger's Immigrant - who lazes around on benefits while simultaneously stealing your job.

It turns out that this idiot is not and never has been a solicitor.

Also with form for railway misbehaviour...

Link Above said:
In 1997, aged 27, Mackinnon was fined £5,000 and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service after he drunkenly brandished a 12 bore shotgun on the platform of Crianlarich station in west Perthshire. He wielded the antique Purdey gun after being thrown off a train bound for Glasgow for smoking.

Just a well heeled idiot, then.

Given she was the solicitor, I assume someone made an assumption somewhere along the way that he must have been and once in print, the mistake was made and spread (by people who wouldn't think to check).

I hope this wasn't a presumption based on race/gender.

It was probably a presumption based on which out of the two people was a drunken fool. ;)
