Hi there,

My girlfriend is in the process of travelling down from Nottingham to stay with me in Reading for a long weekend. She purchased an off-peak return from the ticket office, requesting that she goes via London, as we are spending the day there on Sunday, before she travels back to Nottingham.

She was stopped by barrier staff at Paddington, who advised her that her ticket was only valid via Banbury/Cross Country, and has had to cough up £40 to upgrade her ticket to being via London.

Is there any recourse for reclaiming the extra money she has had to pay, as the extra £40 has significantly increased the cost of her journey.

Thanks

Jon

How much was the original ticket when purchased? and does the ticket say via Banbury? or via London?

Also, what time of day was she travelling, and what time was she stopped at Paddington?

I think she has been overcharged - what time did she travel from Nottingham?

£44.10 is the difference between the Via Banbury and the Via London Off Peak Return tickets. At the very least, she should only have been charged half of this. Also, I believe she should have been charged half the difference with the Super Off Peak fare, which would be valid as long as she was arriving in London after 1120. This would be only £1.15.

I would take it up with FGW.

Also there are cheaper and more flexible fares to use - I will PM you.

Yes, we need more information as requested by maniacmartin and sonic2009.

My gut feeling is that she has been overcharged, which is hardly surprising considering the reputation of barrier staff at Paddington.
