I meant in the front page headline , I should have been clearer . I dont know what either paper went on to say inside as I dont make a habit of reading either rag .

Fair enough! I tend to read a variety of newspapers both physically and on-line in order to stay informed... knowledge is power and all that :)

I suppose the answer is, the papers are trying to appeal to their own demographic, so will inevitably put their own "spin" on any story.

--- edit ---

case in point, this headline from the lovely whiter-than-white Daily Mirror. Was this just reporting the murder of the kids, or was it trying to sensationalise the story to sell more copies?

mirror1.jpg

I could pontificate about what I vile rag the Mirror is, but frankly I think they are all as bad as each other, which is why I would defend the Mail; not because I think it's right, but because it does seem to get singled out for criticism when in reality all of the other papers in that end of the market are doing pretty much exactly the same thing.

I agree they are all the same , sun mirror star mail express whatever you want

I havent read the mirror since the whole saga about the fake Iraqi Prisoner abuse photos , I know Piers the P*** isnt the editor anymore but it wast necessarily just him that was responsible for that .
As for the mail , it just seems too sensationally right wing too much of the time .

again I have to plead ignorance in that I have never seen that front page either , not that I am defending the papers conduct as it still looks sensationalist but I suspect it was from before the trial and his conviction whereas the two previous headlines where after the court case when he was convicted of murdering his kids . so before the trial he was innocent and there was some speculation as to the cause of death so the mirror wasn't using the story of a father murdering his kids to make a political point , as far as I remember I thought they where claiming someone had set fire to the house and so the mirror where trying in their misguided way to give them attention as victims of a serious crime

but afterwards he had definable committed the murders so it is worse to use his story to make some kind of point .

Was The S*ns article about "The Truth" of Hillsborough what the right wing are all about?

The Sun's populist though, not set in stone to one political leaning in the same way that the Socialist Worker, Daily Mirror or Daily Mail would be.

Would it not be true to say that the vast majority of the press are there as organisations not for any political base but solely for their commercial trading interests. Those few such as the Socialist Worker, that have a most specific political image, are those with what you would not call a very large readership base which with the monies paid, help to keep these publications afloat.

I'll bow down to your greater knowledge, I haven't touched the rag for some time. I always thought of the Sun as right wing and most of the things I hear about it sound that way. I haven't read it though so shouldn't comment. The Daily Mail is a proper right wing rag that almost can't help mentioning benefits or the Guardian. The Express is so close to being a comic it isn't worth mentioning. Princess Di and the weather mostly. Like a posh version of the Star or the Mirror. The Telegraph, Times and Guardian I'll flit between to try and get a ballanced view. I'm a lefty in case you hadn't guessed.

;)

From my experience, to paraphrase Joe Walsh, they tell you this, tell you that and change it everyday: they'll literally say whatever will draw people in or get their target market to agree with them.

When certain so-called "newspapers" made eight-page sections of their "newspapers" devoted to the antics of what had occurred in a television programme that I think was called "Big Brother", the time had surely arrived to ask if the word "newspaper" had been used outside its normally accepted context.

Perhaps the days of "The Daily Jeremy Kyle" as a new "redtop" are not so far into the future with articles that will pander to the lowest common denominator in terms of readership.

If you are meaning the Star and Express then it's because they are owned by the same company that owns Channel 5 (hence they always give Channel 5 shows like Big Brother plenty of positive coverage)

These days, you can't expect a balanced view from The Guardian. Since it started to make money online (and not in print), it has become like the Daily Mail (obviously with a different slant and viewpoint) because it has realised the value of click bait articles that generate loads of shares and comments.

The Sun could have been like that, had it not opted for a paywall that effectively means it loses out on all of that. Let's not forget that The Sun has proven its commercial interests by switching allegiance from left to right and could easily switch again if it detected the view of the nation was changing.

Indeed, and I think BB is no longer talked about that much by any other other papers, or indeed anyone. I am amazed Channel 5 thought there was still any mileage in Big Brother.

But then the Daily Mail was also the paper that campaigned for ten years to get the murderers of Stephen Lawrence put behind bars. So all the newspapers have good points and bad points.

The trouble with the Mail is Mail Online, which makes its money from clickbait. Pictures of Kim Kardashian in a bikini get people clicking.

Some might say that the Sun (or perhaps the Murdoch stable) form or lead a vast section of public opinion

Certainly not, that article was what the odious and obnoxious Kelvin MacKenzie was all about. I doubt you'd find many non-knuckle-dragging right wingers defending that particular piece of journalistic garbage :)

EDIT - One posts in haste, and repents in leisure. Having now read the whole thread, which I had neglected to do when posting the above, I now realise the point you were trying to make. My apologies fowler9.

Comparing the Socialist Worker (and by Extension The Socialist Workers Party) to mainstream socialism (as understood generally) is akin to comparing Mein Kampf to a position paper produced by Policy Exchange!

The SWP are a hard left Trotskyist body who consider themselves to be an anti capitalist revolutionary party vehemently opposed to the privileged capitalist ruling elite who oppress the proletariat and grow fat on the backs of their sweat and toil by their effete petty bourgeois mercantilism etc etc etc

It is hardly surprising they took such a distasteful tone! Until this furor the article was read by about 4 people now god knows how many people have read it! I know this is the only article i have ever read in the SW!

Whoever wrote that piece thought they were being jolly clever and funny and getting one over the knobs. In fact they were just being nobs!

It is a stupidly disgusting and thoroughly shameful article. Don't even give this rubbish the time of day!

As yet there seems to be no apology from the scummy 'newspaper', is this what 'socialism' is supposed to be about ?

This is why I can't stand Labour, the SWP and any other far left party and those who keep voting them in. Its not the same party that your parents or grandparents voted for. Socialism now is all about getting your own way in an undemocratic fashion - just look at the EU (and that is an other insitution that I can't stand either) for the answers.

Before any anyone calls me a capitalist, I'm far from it I'm all for social enterprises - private not for profit firms running a service on behalf of the peoples and Govenment.

Labour - far left? You must have been hibernating for the last 20 years.

You've read it wrong. Labour being left, the SWP being far left and any other far left such as TUSC.

That isn’t what you said though is it! I am not sure your understanding of the political spectrum is as defined as you think it is!

Socialism now is all about getting your own way in an undemocratic fashion

I must have missed the long promised Bolshevik revolution in this country, although whilst waiting I do seem to recall several elected labour governments. One wasnt all that long ago......

Though true Socialists would, at best, probably consider the last Labour administration to be centre-left rather than left wing. Certainly they wouldn't call it Socialist, not even close.

I have often wondered what Keir Hardie and Bessie Braddock would have made of Tony Blair, should a time warp had allowed it...
