I've (finally) got Twitter, but that's along with Skype is all I use. I'm still not a fan of Facebook or any of the others.

I'm most active on YouTube and Snapchat. Twitter isn't much more than a bottomless pit of trolling, and I see it being dead within 5-7 years.

The new medium is short form video such as Instagram Stories and Snapchat. People younger than me are not even communicating by text much any more.

I used to maintain a personal Twitter account with around 3,000 followers when I worked for the railway, but not any more.

I still just use Facebook and Whatsapp. They both do what I need them to do and I use them for free. Whats not to like. I have two friends recommending Twitter to me. Not really interested. One recommends it because Facebook is full of people being nasty to each other (They are your "friends", you can make it stop at any time), the other because on Twitter you can follow all kinds of interesting people (I am really not that interested in what pops in to the head of random celebs).

Maybe I am out of touch with the youth of today but I am 42, I know what works for me and how to get done what I want to get done.

Why do you need parental permission for facebook when you use two of their services already?

Whatsapp shares a fair amount of metadata with facebook (the latter owning the former) so chances are they already know your number, your contacts numbers, your contacts names (how they're listed in your phone in case you're using aliases), your phone model, your location and usage data so it can serve you ads. That lot is to any facebook companies (i.e. instagram)

I'm not saying don't use it but just to be aware of your privacy.

My main problem with social media was that I am largely forced into using insecure services and snooping sites because of other, less technologically savvy, people in my circle. For example I cannot use encrypted email signed with a private PGP key because the recipient would be unable to decrypt it at the other end.

A project for later would be to not use google services on my phone but currently having the app store is more secure than APK mirror and f-droid doesn't have the range required

Ooh, didn't know that. I'll have to have a quick research on that!

Ok, thanks for being genuinely concerned about my privacy! :) I'll manage!!
