I don't know if there is a data recovery system for stuff like pictures and videos loaded on the computer because it happened to me lost all my Class 465 pics and had to start from scratch very annoying!! but when I asked the computer engineer if he could fix it he said "Sorry Mate no can do its impossible" but that's over here maybe over in Aussie they maybe how to do it go in your local PC store and inquire.

Hmm, I mean to say that it is an external hard drive, like a giant USB stick, but it holds much more on it.

Apparently it can be done, but I've heard its pricey though?

If its very similar to a USB stick you got a quite a big chance of getting everything back and may-not be that pricey as long as its saved on it.

Well it looks exactly the same as this:

And it has a cable that plugs into it and a USB port on any computer, so its mobile etc and does pretty much everything that a smaller USB stick would do.

Yes that's a hard drive... and it will be 160GB not 16. External Hard drives are the same as internal ones though, moving parts, could easily end up knackered if bumped or something, but the advantage is they hold lots of data.

So if its a moving part, could that moving part be replaced and the content restored and be transferred onto a another source of memory? It would be good if it can be done.

I will do a Google later in the morning (current time 01:25AEST) and see if I can find a reputable person who does repairs to those things.

It's not really as simple as that. If the head crashes, it could end up scattering the data all over the place. Replacing the platter (one of the moving parts) is no use either because thats what the data is on.

The moral of the story is, if your hard drive is physically knackered, it's time to get a new one, it's not economically viable nor practical to try and 'repair' a broken one.

You are correct, pretty much the same.

Aslong as it's like a USB and your pictures and videos are saved on it than you probally will retrieve them.

What ever your back up plan, nothing is 100% safe. Best bet is to back up your important stuff over several medias.

I have various copies of my important stuff on a couple of external HDDs, flash drives and my second internal HDD. Very rarely use CDs or DVDs these days as they can corupt very easily, even if well looked after.
