1. A gritter came along past my house yesterday, but judge for yourself if it made any difference.
2. The bus routes are supposed to be gritted. This is just by the terminus of the 23, and it clearly hasn't been.
3. A junction just by Goldenacre that has turned into an ice rink.
4. Dundas Street. Again, clearly not been gritted.
5. Princes Street. Once again, not gritted.

And here's what one Council is saying on the matter:

· Grit Levels – At the commencement of the current cold snap the Council had available 50% more grit than was in place for the previous winter.

· Grit Bins – Grit bins were all topped up/filled last week. The majority of these were however emptied the same day. Bins are not currently being replenished due to the following:

- Deployment of grit onto the deep snow in place across the City is not effective.

- The current grit stock is being professionally managed to ensure it is deployed in the most effective way over the winter period.

- Evidence exists of grit being either stolen or inappropriately used in areas other than those it is intended for.

the Council is also reminding people that when they clear their driveways of snow they should do so in a sensible manner, not deposit the snow in the highway and ensure it does not present a hazard to pedestrians.

I can't say that I'm worried about the theft of grit if it isn't effective!
Also good to see that in the final line of that quote the Council manages to get a second dig at residents.

Someone came along with a van and stole the actual grit bin along the road from me.

I'm somewhat unsurprised.
This may come as a surprise to the council, but some of the gritters in the city have snowploughs on them, which I seem to recall are fairly good things for clearing deep snow with.

My missus tells me that it's pretty darn treacherous driving in Buxton this morning. I'm amazed that the snow took so long to hit the Peak District, the area is usually first in line for adverse weather, I mean, I managed to find patches of snow in the hills round there in APRIL!

I remember a few winters ago in Newcastle apparently someone was driving around in a Transit van collecting all the grit, more than likely to sell it on at a nice profit.

Getting some proper snow now. Had the misfortune of going to Luton earlier, and the fields were covered. Roads seem to be OK, but Luton's pavements were heavily iced. Still, I saw a pair of 60s and a Red Kite at close range, so there are some compensations.

Went down to Stirling station earlier today. Only took a few photos with my P&S, took quite a few with the film SLR, so will get them processed at the weekend.

One of the Turbostars that came through, it had so much snow in the horns that they were hanging down from it, and all that came out of them was a high pitched squeak.

(Just how rare is it to see more than one or two people crossing at any one time?).

Anyway, I was prompted to recall the discussion in this thread earlier in the week about birds after seeing some colourful birdlife hopping about in the snow. They led me to realise that usually, in late November, we're dealing with high wind, rain and the drains being blocked with fallen leaves, and meanwhile birds would still be finding insects and seeds to eat. Not this year! So I've been out putting up bags of seed and suet for them (which I don't normally bother to do).

Should we all be looking after our wildlife during this snowy spell?

I saw 3 people cross at once!
About 14 people in total in the couple of hours I was there, though I couldn't see it the whole time.

It's main problem seems to be that it doesn't really end near anything.

I've got to get up to Newcastle from Birmingham on Sunday! It can snow as much as it pleases once I'm up there, but if it could just hold off until, say, 5pm on Sunday as I'll be at the mercy of Crosscountrys' less than miraculous Voyagers...

No snow in Birmingham at the moment. About an hour of mild drizzle about a week ago was enough to finish off the puny half an inch we ever had!

That corridor has been really badly affected, although the section from Airdrie to Livingston in general is quite bad because of the height. That said, we had over a foot here in Coatbridge; in years gone by it was rare for the snow to lie, never mind get up to over a foot!
