Bad snow through yesterday and overnight means everything until midday has been cancelled. All Northern stoppers stopped, my Dad unfortunately walked 2 miles to Chinley station to discover Grindleford to Sheffield was snow affected and he wouldn't be getting to work in SHF. Gutted I think.

Apparently Sheffield has been hit hard by the snow, anyone confirm or deny that?

Trains From Picc will start AND terminate at Grindleford Road Transport between Grindleford and Sheffield due to the snow...hope this helps

But due to the weather they are struggling with rail replacement (not surprisingly) Hope its sorted by tomorrow as i'm working the last one!

Yes it is very bad here. I live a 30 minute walk from work and I doubt I will even try try today - straight down a hill.

It's been snowing in Newcastle since last Thursday and very few people have failed to make it in to work. Obviously made of stronger stuff up here!

I'd be amazed if they can safely run a rail replacement from
Grindleford to Sheffield. All the buses here are suspended and the snow is around 20-30cm deep in places.

Even less of a chance of buses reaching Edale, and if the Ashbourne road is as treacherous today as it was yesterday, it looks like the chances of reaching anywhere other than Manchester from the Peak District are severely restricted today.

Agreed! The weather has been particularly unkind to my corner of the north east, and from what I hear life goes on pretty much as normal. It really makes the light dusting of snow we have here in Birmingham look pathetic!

I gather from someone I know who lives in Dore that they currently have 14 inches of snow on their drive.

There is on mine.

The difference with Sheffield compared to Newcastle is that it is all on hills.

Er, never ventured down to the Quayside? Quite a bit of a hill that one. Not to mention the hills in/around Gateshead (Lobley Hill, Sheriff Hill). Then we have the hills in and around Sunderland - it's not the Netherlands we are talking about!

my girlfriend is at university there and the diffference is in sheffield it came in one big fluury and was alot deeper than in newcastle, she said it never got to over a foot in city centre in sheffield it has, and it is built on hills....

and if i remember rightly most of her lecturers didnt make it in and trains were delayed by over an hour..... so it was hardly smooth running was it?

Pretty much everyone I know got into work ok, some were late - substantially in a some cases - there were delays yes but in general everything was still running. It was one big flurry over night last Thursday and since then it has been snowing off and on. I can't comment on how deep it has been in the city centre as I haven't really been there. My commute is into Sunderland and whilst it hasn't been a foot deep I would wager that it's not been far off it.

whats up with dunbar today?

The points into the loop which is Dunbar station have been locked out to prevent the risk of the points not returning to normal. See the 'Special "snow" timetable' thread.

(Its an anomaly of the NR info system which advises passengers to "use other operators" at Dunbar, as clearly NO operators can acess the platform while the track is locked out!)

I made it to Manchester from Chinley this morning on the only train out (Northern 0755). All the morning expresses were cancelled. Was told that there was a lot of snow at Sheffield and Dore but I see that EM are running a Sheffield to Norwich service (which passes Dore) so not sure why they can't break through into the Hope Valley.

Snow still piling up in the Peaks and am surprised Northern are still doing a regular and on time service Between Manchester and Edale - much better then when there is no snow.

This site is pretty good to get an idea on what is running where in the area:

No trains serving Rotherham Central apparently, EMT have a revised timetable and lots of cancellations. Looking bad over most of the country.

^^^^^ You've answered your own question there: As can be seen from Stuart0472s' photo, the east end of the Hope Valley line is thoroughly snowed under. The EMT Sheffield to Norwich service does pass Dore, but on the MML fast lines, so has no bearing on Hope Valley operation.

NR have decided to normalise all the points at the 3 Dore Junctions to avoid them getting snowed/iced up, obviously they can't trust their point heaters.

Hardly, it's not even up to rail height in that picture. Not enough snow there to suspend normal running.

Yeah granted you're right there. Reading a thread in the infrastructure section, I was amazed by the depth snow can reach above the rails before it affects normal running. Points and point heaters are the bigger concern here then.

normalize points? sorry never heard that before

Lock them/set them for the principal route.

As you can see EMT are running to London, slightly late running 11:27 to St Pancras, this working is always formed by a double 5 car unit.

The snow depth in the area is about 12" (30cm for younger members) though at the time of this photo 12:00, it seems to have dropped a little around the track.

ah makes sense...

well i think NR and TOC's need a much better repsonse to snow than this because i think we'll have bad snow most years, climate isnt what it was a decade ago when hardly any fell its changed

i would expect another heavy maybe even heavier fall in the new year and i hope the respsonse i quicker mor organized and better than this

Agreed, in my experience there is usually the heaviest bout of snowfall around late January to early February, and if the current bad weather is anything to go by, then that could be very severe indeed.

This is by no means the first time the UK has seen snowfall in winter, it happens pretty much every year in fact, surprise surprise, so it bemuses me that almost as soon as the snow starts falling the transport network, and I’m talking about the roads as well as the railways here, which are faring even worse than the trains in many instances, completely falls apart as if no-one was expecting this.

Apparently a Northern local stopper from Picc made it through Dore and is now sitting at Sheffield for the return journey.
