Issuing free stock is on the authority of control who will allow the conductor to sign a free issue form for stock handed out after a delay or incident. The company are billed for the (alleged) value of stock the steward/ess gives out by the catering supplier. One of the most fraudulently abused pieces of paper on the railway.

FGW's Passenger Charter mentions the issue of complimentary non-alcoholic drinks until stocks last, in the event of a delay of more than 60 minutes. No mention of snacks or free bags of Starburst sweets though!!!

I guess what happens 'on the ground' might differ from official policy. Although if an audit of what exactly was given out in individual circumstances were to be carried out, then the bean counters at FGW Towers would soon put a stop to anything beyond the issue of complimentary non-alcoholc drinks.

SWT used to give out free tea/ coffe for delays more than 20, 30, 60 mins or whatever it was. Last time I remember them doing it was on a 442.

During the 1980s trollies were trialled on many services where sprinters where newly introduced
However many of the contractors either folded or refused to renew their contracts
One good example was the trolley on the GSW services (Glasgow - Carlisle - Newcastle, Glasgow - Stranraer, and Stranraer - Newcastle)
In the first year they were very welcome, however it only lasted one year

These services actually had a trolley service until 1996!

When I had a FOSS in October half-term, I travelled on FGW 158798 between Romsey and Salisbury, and it was 90mins late, and the trolley was giving stuff away for free to apologis for the delay! how kind is FGW now?
I knicked a packed of starburst and a ginger beer from the trolley before they ran out, there was virtually nothing there exept for those two!

I have had a few large delays on Virgin, once we were told carriage by carriage to go to the shop - they had the First Class weekend offerings (i.e. mini-bottles of water, biscuits and crisps).

The other time they gave just the mini-bottles of water. :cry:
