I passed a southern 455 just north of gatwick airport earlier any ideas where she was off to, could it have been of to horsham via three bridges instead of via sutton.

I know Southern 455s are being refurbed at Eastleigh - couldnt be off down there could it ?

Dont think 455s go south of Dorking either now and certainly never usually south of Redhill so its fairly rare.

As far as I know, South of East Croydon they only go Caterham/Tattenham Corner, at least in timetable regular service. It's rare to go to Redhill.

Its been known when services on the above branches get diverted to terminate there during engineering work, but 1 455 does stable there overnight and then goes and runs either a Caterham/Tattenham service.

Like I said in regular timetable service. During engineering work things all change.

I think I might have seen a 455 heading to Redhill a few weeks ago when I was at London Bridge, but it was probably behind a 377 on the platform

Depends on what day, if it was a Sunday - then it could well have been a 455 terminating that as that has happened.

Just thought, this may be the first time a 455 has gone this south on a Southern network since a pair of 455s ran between London Bridge and Brighton in Summer 2011, covering a FCC service as they were of course having staffing problems.

Nope, did one round trip - 5845

So a 455 WAS on the Gatwick Express ? Cant see it myself as surely if a 442 was unavailable, they would use a pair of 377s instead.

They maybe since 460's have now all been returned and there are no spare 377's at all?

442's are still unreliable for southern.

There was 2 chaps in the cab, the one in 2 nd mans side had a sand coloured shirt on gat ex colours, so he could have been conducting the SN man over the route. Iirc isn't the gates timed at 75mph anyway so a 455 could keep to time on it.

455's are certainly no stranger to this route, having many moons ago worked London Bridge/Victoria - Horsham via Redhill services. 455823+820 reportedly worked the 0845 Victoria - Gatwick on January 17th. Funnily enough, 455820 was combined with 844 to work the 1936 Victoria - Brighton in July 2010 so must enjoy the seaside! ;)

They still work to/from Horsham at peak times but travel via the Mole Valley. I seem to recall reading of one working a Sunday extra to Three Bridges one year, combined with 456006...there were pictures somewhere but think they were lost with fotopic.

I remember that 1z56 seems to ring a bell.
