That is different. If it's stinking the train out then passengers have every right to complain, although I'd argue that a slight waft of fag smoke under the cab door is no worse than driving a late night train with the stench of Burger King coming in to the cab from the passengers behind.

!

Lets also not forget the passengers late at night who think its fine to actually smoke in the carriage itself and make it waft everywhere and stink out the train - its not just the fast food. Though their faces are a picture if I emerge from the back cab to find out whats going on ;)

I'm surprised we have so many members of staff on here, considering the way we are talked to by so called 'enthusiasts', it's a shame it happens both on here and real life really. Personally, I said it before, I think jealousy, with the mentality of 'if I can get drivers sacked, then it's a vacancy I can get'

I used to get would up by some of the more sanctimonious posters on here but rather than get banned off here, I just laugh at them now. I had one earlier say 'illegal is illegal' Brilliant. Like a modern day 'just say no' its much better to get stuck in rather than let some of these warped views go unchallenged. In fairness though there are a lot of decent posters on here who aren't staff. All forums have their clowns though, it's certainly not unique to here.

I wouldn't mind a reasonable debate/argument even but it's the fact that people refuse to read replies and ignore relevant responses.

I'll make this clear on this topic-smoking in cabs is illegal and not very nice for other users affected. It shouldn't be happening but there is a small minority of drivers who still do it. My argument here is that reporting them when they are separated from punters as in a loco or where no smell is entering the rest of the train (or a set of empties/freight etc) is pointless and it's actually no one else's business as it's not affecting them. It is down to the company to take action off their own back, not because some busy body has decided to wander into something which dosnt affect them and started sending in reports. If it does you no harm then stay out of it. It will have absolutely no benifit to anyone and if I reported someone for similar I wouldn't sleep well at night for worry that my interference may have cost someone their job. Sadly it seems that the opposite applies to many on here who quite clearly have far too much time on their hands.

I think both sides are as bad as each other in all honesty.
Personally I wouldn't want someone going into my employment making unnecessary allegations that's not impacted them, and certainly wouldn't waste my time complaining about something at petty as someone smoking.
Find the Channel 4 or 5 documentary "The Complainers" on "on demand" and you will be rather amused by some of the featured complainers, you'd really be amused and think do people like this actually exist.

The only time I'd complain to an organisation is if I'm left at a financial loss, or out of pocket (e.g. going out of my way) due to a company error, or I suffer injury or distress as a result of a company's actions.
I couldn't give a monkeys if somebody is smoking or swearing. When I was a manager in retail it always amused me people coming in to the store and complaining one of my staff were out the back having a fag. I obviously handled it professionally but I would have loved to respond with "And??"

You should try flying long haul with some airlines....there have been dozens of occasions over the past 12 months were I have smelt cigarette smoke coming from the cockpit....is it illegal? Yes....does it bother me....no not really....would I complain? Never!

At the end of the day all it comes down to is the pure human form of jealousy....people hate the fact that some people can get away with doing something wrong and they in their lives may not be able to.....not just smoking but could be anything.

Something I have learned over the past few years is that if you have the attitude of 'what the hell...good on them for getting away with it' then your life becomes much happier, when you start to care about yourself other than others then life is a lot easier.

I struggle to remember the last time a train crashed because the driver was having a fag...

Surely if even managers have seen drivers smoking and not fired them, then there is no safety implications of smoking in the cab?

Not so much that but more it was recognised practice up until fairly recently to the extent that BR built ash trays into cabs.

Mods, can I request we lock this thread? The OPs questions about the legality and safeness of smoking whilst driving has been answered and now it's just turned into a rant from some holier than thou members.

Mods read messages quicker if you use the report button rather than just posting a random message.

Just like our German built Desiros do! ;)

If it bothers you so much then may I recommend you dont sit in the front carriage!
problem solved.

I don't :)

My main concern was if it was a booked seat or first class (in, say, a 319) where you're going to end up there.

All hypothetical anyway, as 99.9% of drivers are of course professional. We only know of a couple that do it, and if it was in a loco I wouldn't care about it!

Right-so why complain about it? Have you actually read any if the replies as you are ignoring them if so. We are talking about in a loco. We are not talking about flooding a MU coach with smoke fumes. That is a different matter and does concern you so is not sticking your nose in then.

Because this thread has expanded into drivers smoking in general, if you read the whole thread...

Yes, but no one has said at any point that reporting a driver who is stinking out a coach with cigarettes is wrong. It's reporting one minding his own business in a loco or empty train that I object to.

And as I say I wouldn't do that. So why the personal vendetta?

Perhaps you need to go back and read all of my replies to your posts, especially this one which was in response to you...

"
My argument here is that this is much more like a builder smoking in your house than them smoking in their own van.

You are paying the builder to be working in your house. Likewise, you're paying (indirectly through tickets) the driver to be working and get you where you need to be.

If, say, you were on a multiple unit where there isn't much to separate the driver from the first class part of the saloon (maybe a FCC 319 or something, I'm not an expert on unit layouts) and you had a first class unit. You're then close to the smoke and could end up having to smell it, much like if a builder was smoking inside your house.

Quite simply, for me, it's a case of the driver giving off a bad image. It's completely unfounded, but members of the public will see this and may think the driver doesn't care (this is not my personal view, I hasten to add). Surely when newspapers are criticising drivers at every opportunity, people should be doing their best to at least look professional and not give anyone an excuse to moan?

What a load of rubbish!

You are NOT paying a driver to do any work for you. Not at all. You do not pay my wages.

And it has already been stated to death that if it wafts through into passenger areas then that is am entirely different matter.

I agree it's a poor company image , it's wrong and illegal but what is being discussed is that it is no ones business to report a driver who is sealed away in a loco. It's calked being a busy body and is incredibly pathetic and says a lot about a person willing to take time to poke around in things which don't concern them."

Now pay particular attention to when I said "And it has already been stated to death that if it wafts through into passenger areas then that is am entirely different matter. " and that isn't the first time I made that point very clear. But still you continued to argue your point. Clearly you hadn't fully read any of my responses to your posts or else you wouldn't have kept on arguing the same point over and over...

Genuinely shocked that this thread has gotten this long.

If you're a member of the public and you're bothered by seeing a driver smoking in a cab coming into a station, then you're probably bothered far too easily. You can report them if it'll make you feel better.

If you're a driver and you're bothered by being reported by members of the public when you come into a station while smoking, smoke somewhere people can't see you, smell any fumes, or realise that you're doing something wrong.
