Regarding NAFI prices, a couple of months ago I was in the mess at Mount Pleasant where a double Lambs and Coke came to the princely sum of 50p, ergo it's still possible to get very merry with a Fiver - its pleasing to see some things have remained sensible!

On a similar note, I remember a circular sent out in the early 70s which went something like this:

"Please circulate the following to all Officers:
The latest medical research contends that excessive drinking may have serious repercussions in the long term health of the individual. In light of this, we suggest that individuals limit their alcohol consumption to no more than 3 bottles of Gin, or their equivalent, per week. We appreciate this may seem a draconian measure, but it is based on corroborated medical research".

Perhaps Flamingo or some other TOC staff can confirm an actual instance and what the outcome was.

Anecdotal: I've heard of people being fined, but never witnessed it personally. Couldn't give you any times, dates or locations with 100% certainty.

As regards Train Crew and smelly breath, sometimes, before working a late train, I'll get a microwave curry in Pad. If anybody gives me any trouble on board, I just breath on them

Interesting quotes on smoking.

I have never smoked and never will.

However, my mother, father, brother, girlfriend and some friends smoke.

Passive smoking? I have taken loads of it in - I have for almost all my life and I am close to 41.

Chest problems? NONE at all.

Too many people make an issue out of it. It is down to the immune system for me. Avoid in fear and when it happens your system has trouble. I have a good immune system as I do not fear things.

I do agree it is good to avoid smoking in front of others, but to say smoking is bad - remember there are billions taken in taxes from smoking. 3p rise in tax if it was completely banned everywhere???? I would say more like 10p!!! That will hurt everyone.

Health issues? Hmm debateable - some are probably smoking related, alcohol more so I reckon. I drink alcohol, and like it and sometimes (albeit VERY rarely have been drunk on trains but NEVER caused anybody a problem).

We are living in a world now where do gooders are causing massive grief to all.

People smoke, and provisions allowing for them to smoke are better than stopping. Prevention is better than cure? Of course it is more complex than this but I am amazed of the hatred towards smoking.

I am alive, comfortably, and it does not bother me one bit!

Your immune system can do nothing about the tar in smoke which coats your lungs.

Sometimes TOO much is made of it! I am not saying I am right but there is a lot to be said about making too big of an issue for me!

Because you're lucky. And these problems - like COPD - take time to develop.

Just because YOU have not had any problems doesn't mean that everyone exposed to the same amount of smoke wouldn't have them.

Maybe I am lucky - but I think there is a major movement that is getting so disaffected by such tar etc exposure.

£11.1 billion in tax from tobacco sales in the uk alone.

I am no accounting genius but to me that is easily (even taking into account NHS issues) 5p on tax minimum to account for shortfall!

Sensible options of designated smoking areas everywhere will help everyone concerned!

I agree not smoking is better of course but I do not smoke so I cannot answer that!

Greenback I know that. It is a bit of a lottery, but the more you worry about the more it becomes a problem.

My brother smoked most of his life and had a similarly flippant devil may care attitude towards smoking. Last November without any kind of warning he was diagnosed with lung cancer and died within two weeks.
It's a matter of increasing your risk - some people get away with it others don't. I see it as like crossing the road, you are generally okay on a quiet street but trying to cross all six lanes of the M25 will significantly increase the risk of getting run over.

It's not that I think smoking should be banned but that it should be restricted to areas where it doesn't impact on others. I used to smoke myself until last year and it's only after stopping I gradually realised how much of an imposition it used to be on those around me.

I am not disputing it - it is indeed the luck of the draw!

Crossing the road is a very loose analogy though.

What about going to the toilet in Australia and you unluckily get bit by one of those spiders? It happens in all walks.

It is sad what has happened to your brother I agree. I am lucky up until now, but what I do agree with is I do not go looking to breathe in smoke passively. It cannot be good these days with all the pollution on the roads with fuel etc compounding it!
