I have just purchase a Samsung smart TV.

Anyone know if you can save the files and play on desktop PC for later use.

I'm hoping the files would just need converting but I have yet to have a go.

No.

Samsung SmartTV hits you twice - once with a Linux-only disk format, and then with proprietary DRM encoding on the video files themselves. You can only watch on another Samsung SmartTV.

And, if the main PCB fails on your Samsung SmartTV (like mine did after less than a year), you lose all the recordings anyway because the new chip won't decrypt recordings made by the old one. :(

However, on my 2011 model at least, you can just plug in a bog standard fat32 formatted hard drive to one of the USBs at the back and it will save quite happily to that though the files can't be played back on anything else as pointed out already.

EDIT - Remembered I had a photo. This is what it says if you try to play back footage on a different device (even the same Samsung SmartTV with the main PCB replaced).
I lost all my Great Railway Journeys recordings. (GRRR!)
