Smart Meter behaviour

We have had a smart meter for a while. I occasionally wonder what it is measuring and this evening I did a little test.

Just after 8pm three of us had showers. They added up to 30 minutes. I had noted the energy usage that day so far came to £2.25 before the showers started,. I forgot to check until after the last shower and the usage was £2.31. I thought 6p is stunningly low !. So re-read yes it is £2.31. I then wondered if I had misread the £2.25. I then validated by calculating that 6p for 30 minutes equated to £2.88 for a day - our daily average is roughly £3 so obviously 6p was rubbish. Anyway I waited and at least ten minutes after the last shower the reading jumped to £2.71. So 45p for up to 30 minutes of shower seems plausible. But why did it take at least 10 minutes for the useage to be reflected on the screen ?.

So my questions are :-
1) Is there some sort of delay from the gas usage to the figure appearing on the smart meter gizmo box ?.
2) Is it that the meter only reports a movement of a whole unit and our showers had finished just before a whole unit ?.
3) Is the problem an intermittent signal ?.
4) Are the meters only reporting avery 10 minutes or longer ?.
5) Are smart meters worth taking any notice of.

I will also say that if we are averaging £3 per day in the summer that would be £1,000 for twelve months. That is a bit more than we have paid in the past in a real year with winter thrown in. So our bills are already higher than last year without seeing what winter does !. I am not surprised but I cannot get my head round it.

The answer to No1 is yes, electricity is immediate whereas gas there's a delay. Can't help with 2 - 5; but with No5 my meter gives the reading from a completely different tariff that I'm on; my company knows about it but can't reverse it. It's because I accidentally put myself on a fixed tariff, reversed it immediately with the company but they can't alter the meter/display unit! I am paying the right price for my power - so in effect the display unit is almost useless.

Is the hot water for your shower from a tank or 'instantaneous' ?
Good point - instantaneous from a gas combi boiler.

Ah ha. So this might be the problem as it would be gas usage. There was me thinking everything is clever and instant these days. I should go back to reading the meter under the stairs really !.

Well yes, the reading at the point there will be spot on! Does baffle me why the gas numbers are showing there correctly and instantaniously, it can't show on the smart display immediately.

Edit; mine's under a cabinet in a utility room, I have thought of putting a webcam in there facing the meter so wherever I am I have an accurate reading, but it's too darned dark in there to capture the reading!

Thinking about how you described it, in the case of three showers of 30 minutes, it looks as though any of the gas use only got reported once in about 30 minutes.

I’d have to get the booklet out but I’m sure my gas meter is only read and fed back to the company once a day, and anything changing on the internal display is instantaneous electrical only. I know their website usage graphs are far less detailed for the gas.

The gas smart meter sends readings to the comms hub on the electricity smart meter. The gas smart meter is battery powered, so to lengthen the battery life it sends readings only every 30 minutes. This is fine as there are no time of use gas tariffs.
The electricity meter is powered from the mains so sends readings to the home display every few seconds.
I believe the batteries in the gas meter are designed to last 7 years or so.

Quite often the £ figures on these meters are nonsense anyway as they only seem to update to new tariffs quite patchily. Doesn't affect your bill as the home display isn't used for billing.

Mine didn't update to my new tarrif in August so it's now only used to give me a rough idea of usage.

Right so I better assume I am spending more than the smart meter display infers.

It still allows you to see how many units you're using, even if the price displayed isn't accurate.
