Smart card to paper ticket?

Can passengers who have been issued with a Smart Card ticket move to a paper ticket?

More specifically, a passenger has a Greater Anglia smart card season ticket from Rochford - London Terminals. Can this passenger convert it back to a paper ticket? If so, how?

I can find plenty of information on how to convert a paper ticket to a smart card ticket but none on completing the reverse process.

Assuming that the fare paid is the same, I can't see any reason why - in principle - it shouldn't be possible to do that. The smart card / paper ticket is just the medium by which the authority to travel is carried.

No practical advice of how to achieve this, other than calling/writing customer services.
