My wife and I are having a short (4-day) visit to Glasgow in a few weeks so I've been looking for things to see and do while we are there.

We'll be travelling there by train, so will be using public transport to get around the city

I see we can apply online for a free Smart card ... is it worth it, for a 4 day trip ?

I know I could just get a smart card when we arrive, but I like the idea of free via the website, rather than the £3 if buying in Glasgow

Is the smart card something like the Oyster card in London.

What smartcard is this?
Using a Smartcard allows you to travel across Subway, rail and bus with just one card. A Smartcard gives you access to the widest range of Subway tickets and the best value travel.
Type
All day

Adult
£3.00

Child*
£1.50

Concession**
£1.50

That said, the Subway isn't exactly a network and it is possible to tour Glasgow without using it, if the attractions someone is interested in aren't on the route.

It isn't obvious to me whether the £7.40 Roundabout ticket, which may be more useful for the Greater Glasgow area, can be issued on a smartcard.

The question is, are you staying somewhere where you primary transport method would be the subway?

If not, then probably not worth getting the smart card however if that is the case then absolutely worth it. Its a 20p saving on a smart card versus paper ticket.

The smartcard also allows you to purchase ScotRail Super Off Peak tickets, which are only available on smartcard and in the ScotRail m-ticket app.

All Scottish smartcards are interchangeable, so a Subway smartcard can be used on ScotRail and vice versa.
