Smallest interchange

What's the smallest station you can change between different services?

The smallest interchange I've used is St Helens Junction, followed by Newton-le-Willows. Both 2 platform stations but the latter is slightly bigger.

I did Knutsford-Piccadilly-Rainhill.

Outward I changed at St Helens Junction to the service from Victoria. I used St Helens Junction rather than Newton-le-Willows in that direction because it meant if the service from Victoria was cancelled it'd add 30 minutes to my journey not 1 hour.

Returning I changed at Newton-le-Willows on to the Llandudno-Manchester service.

Possibly the only interchange which advertises a one minute connection time.

Long Preston?

You can change between Leeds - Carlisle, Morecambe - Leeds and Blackpool North/Preston - Carlisle (Dales Rail).

Otherwise Ormskirk? Just one platform split into third rail and non-electrified, offering Liverpool Central - Ormskirk and Ormkirk - Preston.

Smallbrook Junction on the Isle of Wight would probably be the very smallest, but it offers just an interchange with a heritage railway so not technically another service?

Castleford only has 1 platform in use but is also an interchange. I think you can get around 4 - 5 carriages in at the moment.

(Carlisle (0558) - Bradford FS (0838) ; recommended change point is usually Shipley or Skipton, but both trains call at Steeton and you'e guaranteed a same platform connection).

There aren't any terminators anymore (at least from the south) - the early morning from Newcastle stays in the through platform!

I would have said Clarbeston Road, but it's difficult to change there these days I think!

probably not, but there are going to be some people (very few) who do use it as an interchange

Ashburys is the smallest I've used. It's quite well served by trains but I've seldom seen passengers there.

You should have seen it in the 1950's and 1960's when many of the workforce at Crossley Engines came to work on the train, before they started buying cars. The factory had its own private siding, where fully-built engines were sent off by rail to naval shipyards. Now the factory is demolished but the station still remains open.

The questions was, "What's the smallest station you can change between different services?" so therefore Smallbrook Junction is deffinately allowed as it is there solely for interchange between just two short lines, even if one is a Heritage Line.

You could say Manulla Jn in the Irish Republic - just an island platform on the junction of where the branches to Westport/Ballina divide - no public access, purely there for theose who need to make the Westport-Ballina journey!
