The side windows in new trains are extremely small. Why is that? On old trains the windows are like normal car/van windows. What is the purpose of miniaturising the windows - the only thing I can think off is it stops the driver looking sideways and getting distracted?

If you refer to driver's cabs, structural strength requirements are much more rigorous than only a few years ago, and I think that has a lot to do with it. There's also a huge amount of equipment in a modern cab that has to go on the bulkhead somewhere.

185s, Electrostars, 175/180, Voyagers and all other Desiros have very large windows (the 70x particularly). They are not small on 800s either.

It’s poor design, nothing else.

Edit: oh you mean cab windows, sorry.

One of the few things going for voyagers are their large windows.
