Slow Speed Two

'Slow Speed Two' as its currently known is a seperate project being run directly by the DfT, it will be a walking/cycling/etc route which will run the length of all branches of HS2, it will mostly be within a corridor 3 miles either side of HS2, but the main route and any branches would go beyond that to link to key points of interest.

Some of the route will use existing bridleways and be an upgrade to sections of the National Cycle Network, other sections might require new paths, preferably by agreement with owners, CPOs being a last resort.

Sounds a good idea. I was initially sceptical about the replacement cycle path alongside the Airdrie - Bathgate line, but actually its turned out a really nice community resource which can feel surprisingly remote and rural despite the passage of fast trains at fairly close quarters.

Trains, as many people have pointed out, are quiet (unlike cars and planes). Cycling alongside a railway line is much more pleasant than cycling alongside a road.
