Just passed Slough for the first time in months, noticed that they now have fencing along both fast line platforms, however all the gates were open and trains still passing through Fast.

Now on both those platforms regular GWR call there at Slough, do they only open the gates to allow you on those platforms a short time before train is due?
As I saw multiple trains passing through at speed with people on platform.

I think on the Down Platform, there is still an open area near the station entrance, but most of the rest is barriered off. You've also got access to the Windsor branch there.

Other stations do a similar thing of opening the gates a few minutes for the irregular trains on main lines - Romford is one.

From May, trains stopping at Slough won't routinely use platforms 2 and 3.

This is of course also true, with the Didcot Parkway trains running fast from Paddington to Slough and crossing to the relief lines and the stop being removed from the Oxford / Worcester / Hereford trains.

Ah! I didn’t know that! Handy those Oxford/Hereford stoppers.

I wonder how they've done it given that the new footbridge is one end of the station, while the Windsor platform is at the other. Something certainly needed to be done though, the area around the gateline was always a pinch point and absolutely horrible during the rush hour periods, particularly when a Windsor service was in - you had people queuing to use the old bridge, people queuing to enter or leave the station at the gates and people trying to cross either of them to get to or from the Windsor service.

It basically starts from the footbridge and goes all the way down the platform with a fairly small entrance area which was staffed - although that might have been pre-final construction because it won't routinely be used now as mentioned above. The gateline area has been extended a bit too.

It's sadly a major fatality hotspot so something was needed.

The gateline there is terrible. It really needs to be moved into the station building where there's plenty of room for a full length one with 5-6 gates.

Cheers. That'll be a significant improvement, then. I never understood why they put it in such an awkward place on the platform to start with - the booking hall is cavernous with loads of space for it. The former layout had big crowds just a couple of feet from HSTs zooming through at 125 - it was oppressive.

The gateline has been moved inside the station building, which is a big improvement.
