Slippy rails delays today

Bad evening on Southeastern, massive disruption due to poor rail conditions.

Definite slipping this evening on the Liverpool-Norwich getting away from Alfreton and trying to accelerate up the grade after Trowell. Went from 2min down at Stockport to 10min down at Nottingham.

Conditions have been poor all over today. My train earlier (1225 Denby Dale to Huddersfield) managed to lose 6 minutes on the climb out of Barnsley to Dodworth and a further 5 between Dodworth and Denby Dale. Apparently there were problems up Salterhebble bank and at Bradford Interchange too.

Heading into Leeds this evening so hopefully 5 185s an hour will have kept the rails clear!

As an update, I was aiming to catch the 1716 from Batley to Leeds. Arrived in time for the preceding ex-Victoria service which was running over 20 late. When it turned up it was a 142+155, with the 155 locked OOU because of an electrical issue- not sure if the 155 was providing power, but if it wasn't that explains the delay!

Now heading home on the 2332 TPE which thankfully was 11 late, saving my calves/lungs from a bit of stress!

Only seen three rail head treatment trains this leaf fall season so far, then saw three in the space of a couple of hours today. Not sure if its a coincidence, or if they haven't been out and about as much this year.

Bad conditions in the West Country this evening. Journey Check gives the impression trains are slipping and sliding through Cornwall and struggling on the Devon Banks. RHTT ran before start of play this morning

I'm currently on 1C84 now 180 mins late 125mins is due to rail conditions in Cornwall. Slipped to a stand several times.

I'm currently on 1A36 2000 Plymouth to Padd from Exeter which kept time over the South Devon banks, but is finding the relatively less severe climb to Whiteball a struggle. Meanwhile the train that should have been in front of us, 1A98 1731 Penzance to Padd which left Penzance on time, is now over 3 hours late from Liskeard.

RTT now shows that luckily it didn't lose any more time and arrived at Penzance at 2248. Still a very, very painful journey time and I should think that the noise/ride quality probably wasn't the best during the wheelslip either!

NRE website now updated to indicate problems on SWT to continue until 19tj December

Yet when they did that, South West Trains didn't up their Web to 19 Dec.. I pointed this out via Twitter so they could fix it. I was told the Web Site had been updated but it hadn't. I said it hadn't changed and didn't hear back, so I left it.

One disruption notice on South West Trains journey check said train had returned to normal following poor rail conditions.

Below it was a separate message saying no services running between Aldershot and Ascot due to poor rail conditions.

Are slippery rails affecting more services with no leaf fall timetable than last year?

This morning the 8.03 Guildford to Waterloo a minute late and then was slow into London Road,even seeming to pause for a time. That station had no monitoring time to report and by the time the reached Clandon it was already 4 down. No chance to make that up. I could definitely hear the train slipping today as it lost even more time. This is a line with a leaf fall timetable at least so it could make up some lost time.

Not all lines have that luxury but may be they don't usually need it.

This morning my last train had on arrival in a certain Dutch town a delay of 40 minutes. With only 1 stop it grew to 1 hour. All to slippery tracks. Oh; and traintravel was affected with the storm in the afternoon with trees falling on the tracks.

There has been a lot of problems affecting South West Trains routes today. Are these all caused by the weather or are they just unlucky that some problems have occurred on the same day as weather related problems have occurred?

Do different stocks vary much in dealing with leaf fall, I have noticed with S stock on the Metropolitan line that they seem to have no difficulty moving off but are less keen to stop, The A stock seemed to have it the other way round, though flats sounded to be common on A stock and rare on S stock

With the slippery rails disruption notices for South West Trains removed from National Rail Enquiries and it being much colder this week, have Network Rail moved to dicing mode with their rail treatment trains?

My opinion looking at the weather forecast is that there could still be leaf fall related issues.
