Sleeper with no buffet

Hi all
in the middle of a all line rover come home for a night for a few essentials.
Question i want to ask is last night i caught the ABD-EUS sleeper (67011) then 90024 on boarding i was informed that there was no buffet facilaties on board (even cold drinks) as there was no power to the buffet but informed that it would be working when the electric came on at edinburgh at 1AM!! but edinburgh came and went and still no power is there any chance of some compensation??,caught sunday night EUS-GLC sleeper no probs on that even went up the east coast as well!. Any ideas how i stand?

Yeah, just get an FSR compensation form. VXC once sent me £10 for a closed buffet and non working toilet.

What?! And when Loader and I had to sit in the vestibule when we'd booked a seat on what was supposed to be the HST we were offered a 5% refund :roll:.

It was working when i went Fort William - Euston last Friday in the seated coaches, went down to the buffet and asked if they had a spare plug so i could put my phone on charge prior to two days camping at the Spa Valley where I wouldn't get a chance to charge it, he said it was no problem! Phone even stayed alive till Sunday then which must be a record for my bloody phone!

I'd try and get compensation; certainly annoying to be on a sleeper for such a long distance without the buffet service you had been promised. I presume you got "potable water" or something, though?

yes it was!!.It was weird on sunday there was no power coming out of the sockets but full buffet yet on monday there was power but no buffet the attendant said no refreshments because of HSE come on! in the 70's/80's/90's there was plenty of carriages without lights on train services due to faults

If refreshments were included in the price of the ticket (which on an over nighter I would guess that they were - even for just the usual morning tea/coffee) then a refund should be available. If no hot facilities are available then they should be prepared to make every effort to provide an alternative (Ie. cold drinks) or have mobile boiler trollies to deliver at various stations en route. Also, if no service was available or going to be available then appropriate stops should have been made for this problem to be rectified and drinks to be obtained. I would have thought that there would be some sort of health law that prevented them from doing this on long journeys such as overnight sleepers because its usually near on impossible to be able to obtain liquid refreshments en-route at that time of night anyway?

When I worked at ICOBS there were a few different options available in the event of Lounge Car failure
If it occured northbound, resulting in closure before departure, then additional stocks of bottled water were arranged and stored in the Kitchen
If it occured before Crewe, then a message was sent from Crewe to Preston, again for additional stocks of bottled water to be picked up at Preston
If it occured southbound then the only option was to wait until Edinburgh and send a message to Preston for additional stocks of bottled water

In most cases tea and coffee was still available in the morning to the berths
However, occasionally one would fail so arrangements would be made to retop with water at either Crewe or Edinburgh

If a train was two hours or more late, then the stock of bottled water would be made available to all passengers

Had both Lounge cars failed on the Edinburgh to london Stretch?

Actually, would this have been the Monday night Aberdeen - Euston ?
If so, then that was probably a London crew so it is more likely there was no Chief Steward !
I can't see any other reason, other than complete coach failure, keeping it out of use due to no lighting

Sadly if the Lounge Car fails then it is preferred not to have passengers moving along the entire train, to reach the other set and its open Lounge Car

Talking of CrossCountry, I sent them an e-mail asking why one of their trains regularly left ahead of schedule by up to 6 minutes and they replied trying to offer me compensation!

I declined their offer.

I would have taken the offer, normally it's Rail travel Vouchers
Even if you can't use them, quite easy to trade them to someone you know that can
I got about £250 from GNER last year, used about £100 of them myself and traded the remainder to a relative that used them to pay for their SPT pass!

It caused you inconvenience and may have cost you money to make alternative arrangements, so their offer seems fair
I remember departing Aberdeen "on-time" at 20:50 and getting held at Montrose
The driver then walking back that we were going to be held for about 30 minutes as a passenger had a reservation with an Aberdeen departure time of 21:15
Someone had decided it was cheaper to delay our train by 30 minutes, rather than have the passenger taken by taxi all the way to London!

Scotrail flew me down to Southampton after I woke up expecting to see Watford Junction through the window and found Garelochead. I'd been drinking in the Lounge when the first 37 failed and another one was on the way. It appears the rescue loco then failed shortly after!

I remember the lights failing on the seated car of the Fort William portion a couple of years back, between Crewe and Preston - everybody was upgraded to berths for nothing! Presumably they had to do this for safety reasons.
