Perhaps a strange question, but when a train pulls in somewhere at 5am, do you get the "We are now approaching X" waking you up? I'm guessing not but something I've wondered!

Unless you're travelling seated <D

In that case it's best to set an alarm (or two) on your phone and put it to vibrate.

The only time I travelled in seated accommodation, I was woken by the guard, "Westerton, mate, 5 minutes." I had magically fallen asleep again after changing trains at Edinburgh. Amazed that the guard remembered considering that people had swapped seats by then.

I think that the sleepers are the only trains in regular service that don't have public address facility. (but I may be wrong in which case I expect to be corrected within minutes!).

They do have very loud fire alarms, as I found at about 2am last time I travelled.

Oh yes. On a southbound you'll often find one of the crew having a good old prattle on the approach to Esplanade, St Johns Road and Smallbrook Junction (at a minimum).

Has this been retrofitted? I don't believe the last 1938 stock I went on run by London Underground had a PA

Yes it was retrofitted when the trains were converted for 3rd rail use.

The Night Riviera has a PA, but this is fairly quiet, and introduced by the delightful old Mk3 chime (discussed on here a few months back)

I remember a nightmare trip (as in I didn't sleep at all) in seated from Pad to Taunton and there were announcements at both stops.

On the Night Riviera travelling westwards, the attendant will tap on the door and have your coffee/orange juice/shortbread/hot bacon roll at Bodmin Parkway if you are getting off (sorry: leaving the train) at Truro, and just before Truro if you're leaving the train at St. Erth/Penzance. Wonderful if you like to have a view of Truro Cathedral first thing in the morning. :D

It should not be forgotten the Cornish sleeper is classed as normal train in seated coaches (and can see a lot of short hop custom in Devon/ Cornwall)

I remember hearing a few announcements on the Night Riviera from Penzance - Pad, this was the seated portion, I specifically hearing Reading being announced as I had just woken up.

From an another discussion on Amtrak, I was reminded how their long distance sleepers work in coach. Seated passengers are assigned coaches along with people heading to similar destinations, so that on arrival the car with the one opening door aligns with the platform and so that people disembarking during the night don't disturb passengers going further.

In Amtrak coach (seated), conductors write the three letter code (or something approximating it) of your destination on a slip of paper that fits into the facing edge of the luggage rack. Even with crew changes, conductors can pass through the carriage to check destinations without waking passengers unnecessarily.

Well we already sort of have that with the reservation slips on everyone's headrests. (Could do with making the font larger on them though, so they can be read from a distance.)

An interesting thought; if (a massive if) new stock is procured for the sleeper services, will they have to comply with the new stock requirements of hustle alarms and chimes when doors are closing/opening respectively? This would be something of a nuisance to passengers sleeping in berths located near the doors. The present CDL door bolts lifting/dropping is noticeable enough to me when I'm trying to sleep.

Apologies for derailing the thread slightly..please move if deemed necessary.

seams relivant enough to me- I would think this would need some looking into and I have to say despite being 1 of the types of passenger for which these gagits and gizmos are intended I would not thank them for waking me up at night. Any power doored stock on the continent doing sleapers abroad? If so what do they do?↲

Though if they sort out the soundproofing you would hope it isn't very noticeable from inside the cabins with the door closed.
