Sleeper Tickets

Am I right in thinking that standard (i.e. not sleeper specific) tickets are valid on the ScotRail seated sleeper?

For example an Inverness or Aberdeen Super Off-Peak Return to London Terminals.

The ScotRail website is unclear.

Yes, if you are happy to sit in a seat all night, the sleeper does indeed convey seated accommodation.

As far as I know, the seated coaches are still Mk2s (and cannot be changed as Mk3s would be too long) so good luck sleeping through the noise when the train brakes

I don't think they are. They're not listed as ticket options for the seated portion of the sleeper on Scotrail's website here and I believe reservations are compulsory, even in the seated area. That's always how I've understood it, anyway - I'm open to correction.

The Super Off-Peak Return will be a last resort, I'll call ScotRail Telesales to see if there are any bargain berths.

As for getting to sleep in the seated coaches, I don't think I'll have any difficulty there.

When fraser158 says "standard" he means the routeing is "Any Permitted", and therefore valid.

The fares listed on the Scotrail site for seated tickets are cheaper than the Any Permitted tickets.

However fraser158 is making a return journey and, I assume, wishes to use daytime services on the other leg, therefore a Super Off Peak Return routed "Any Permitted" would be the most appropriate fare for the journey.

To add to previous comments, this is absolutely fine, and can be combined with a ‘sleeper supplement’ to give you a bed for the night too. The impression I get (having booked a couple myself in the past) is that the allocation of berths for sleeper supplements on each train is low, meaning they might have sold out. However, I have heard that if you turn up on the night as a reserved seated passenger and there's an unused berth on the train for whatever reason, the stewards can sell you the supplement on-the-spot for you to use it.
