Slam door trains

I’m just wondering if anyone could tell me what TOCs still have slam door trains, and how many they in service?

I understand they are all to be phased out completely by 2020 does anyone have any clarification on this?

Yes, Crosscountry have four slam door HST sets, with one further set having already been converted to power door operation and the rest to follow.

I'm sure Arriva Train Wales still have some in service. I remember seeing one stuck on Platform 14 at Manchester Piccadilly a while back - dispatcher was having a nightmare with people getting on and off.

You have all forgotten that Chiltern have the 'Banbury set' which is formed of 7 and is slam doors. Slam doors also known as drop lights.

I saw what looked like a charter tour at Carlisle last week with old blue and grey Mark 2 coaches between a pair of Class 68s. Do the new accessibility regulations regarding slam doors and more also apply to smaller charter and heritage outfits too?

Slam doors also known as drop lights.

Well that’s news to me. Drop lights always used to refer to the opening windows that dropped into the body shell, including those in the driving cab.

'Lights' is a railway manufacturing term for a window. EG; We needed to replace a light after youths had thrown rocks at the train.

Drop lights are the windows themselves and feature on both normal slam doors and occasionally (for example, the cabs of Turbos/Turbostars) power or air assisted doors.

Drop light is definitely only the window bit & does not need a door. The spring thing is called a Lazy Z I seem to recall when reporting to fault.

I believe charter stock has some exemptions, providing it's used for a limited number of days a year.

WCRC still operate plenty of slam door stock.

You get to sort-of relive the glories of slam-doors at platform two at Batley... as the doors on the 185s are unable to cope with the cant of the track, so won't open properly until you give them a shove!
