Skywards Rail : Avoid

Emirates airlines has launched a rail booking portal, ostensibly to let members use points to pay. But they also sell tickets that earn points.

It is an absolute car crash.

Trains are listed as an hour later than the true departure (I tried Euston to Inverness, Georgemas Junction* to Inverness etc)

Fares are higher than every other app I compared it to.

*I had to select Georgemas Junction as the site didn't list Wick. It gave me a 1745 departure to Inverness, arriving 2113.

For Euston to Inverness it shows the train at 2215 and on a date other sites are charging £80, Skywards rail is charging £127.

Have a look and see what nonsense you can find!

Skywards Rail from Emirates

Whether you’re already exploring Europe or connecting to nearly 30 cities with Emirates, with Skywards Rail, you can use your Skywards Miles to take you further by train. Choose from over 40 popular train operators including Eurostar, SNCF, Deutsche Bahn, Renfe, ÖBB and Trenitalia.

Emirates has followed Virgin Red and launched its own rail booking plaform.

It’s a new way of earning and burning Emirates Skywards miles. The upside is that it offers Europe-wide rail bookings, which Virgin Red does not, but there are also some downsides.

Actually, I’m being polite. It’s a complete disaster. Let’s take a look.
Reading that article it sounds very bad and one to avoid.

Example of Weymouth to Cardiff where GWR operate a direct service every Sunday. At 0801hrs not 0901hrs

Potentially useful if you have some orphan miles, but 10000+ for a £66 train journey is mediocre value. And they do need to sort the booking engine out first.

I tried it this morning. I think you need a Skywards account to see results - at least I did.

It does indeed look awful. I’m surprised it can be accredited given it’s selling tickets at higher than face value?

Timezone failure is a rookie error. (BTW I’m currently in CET-land, and it still shows UK times wrong here.)

One thought, though. The timezone disaster could be an opportunity. Buy an Advance, and if you wish to change your mind later you have a ready-made excuse for a free refund!

That's dreadful. How has that passed accreditation?

Atomised appear to be the entity ultimately issuing all the tickets; there's a proud "Powered by Rail Europe" on the bottom of every ticket.

So presumably Emirates Skywards --> Junction --> RailEurope --> Atomised.

If there was any API client accreditation before this went live, it wasn't extensive.

Emirates (The Airline) has launched a new website selling rail tickets in Britain and some other European countries.

It's an unbelievable mess, with problems including:
- Showing departure and arrival times offset by one hour for GB rail services
- Charging a 10% markup on every ticket sold
- Not showing all services
- Cannot use Railcards
- etc.

How in the world did this pass RDG accreditation?

Headforpoints have done a good writeup of the problems:

It seems to have issues with being overly conservative with routeing, for example it doesn't find any tickets between Fulwell and Hinchley Wood.

Edit: I have also now found one case where it suggests a route that is not permitted by the routeing guide

I was going to say, terrible booking engines are sometimes worth a check because it not doing what it's supposed to do might sometimes work in your favour...

The lack of via points makes it very hard to find anything useful in this case but that is definitely true

Have an interest as I do collect in the Emirates Skywards scheme, but will wait for the teething issues to be ironed out before delving into this one.

I just tried it and it wasn't just bad, but completely non-functioning. It returned a HTTP 500 Internal Server Error as soon as I clicked the search button:

1785306886455.png

Now this is probably solved by logging into my Emirates Skywards account first, given it was trying to send me to a single signon page:

1785306947908.png

Ok so I've logged in, then hit search, then it asked me to login again, then took my back to the starting page and I had to click search yet again (though it at least remembered my search criteria)

Now I've searched and not only hasn't it shown me any results, for trains which are definitely running, but it hasn't given me an error about no results either; it's just blank:

1785307130585.png

So now I've identified that it's uBlock Origin which needed disabling to show the results.

It's now returned me one result for getting from St Pancras to Bangor (I intentionally chose St Pancras not Euston because it doesn't have a generic London Terminals option and I wanted to see what would happen) tomorrow leaving after 12, which involves the changes at Crewe and Chester. In reality there's around 2tph between Euston and Bangor, some of which are direct:

1785307528125.png
There is no 1533 from Euston tomorrow so that ought to be fun. Interestingly, there is a 1433, so it seems the timezone conversion is fubar.

The price is then 10.4% higher than booking directly with Avanti.

Which is strange anyway because both Avanti and Emirates are selling the ticket as two singles at £178-£199 instead of the off peak return at £127.40, and potentially even cheaper with split tickets.

And of course, you can't use Railcards on the Emirates site, because that would be too helpful.

Turns out you can convince it to sell you a return ticket by selecting Euston instead of St Pancras as the origin. Which is at least an improvement on the Avanti site where you select two journeys at £89.10 each and then when you click through to the next screen it offers you the choice of a cheaper off peak return. I swear the Avanti site never used to do that and showed the 'from' price on the journey results screen first. They'll potentially lose business over that UX choice.

Emirates have an interesting quirk though when it only offers Anytime Returns instead of Off Peak Singles or Off Peak returns which are valid for the journey (making it more than double the price it should be!):

1785308288836.png

And no Advance fares showed up, which do exist for the inbound journey.

It also then has a curious 'Unavailable' label next to the 'Book' button, but it lets you book anyway. I think as this is the inbound and I'd previously selected the luxurious Anytime Return it's trying to communicate that there's no price to display. But to me that suggested it's unavailable to select/book:

1785308549327.png

1785308564683.png
I've then entered my passenger details and continued to the payment page and I get, "Checkout economics require persisted selected_offer_economics from Gateway book.":

1785308598365.png

No disabling of browser extensions or VPNs fixes the issue, so after all that I can't actually buy the tickets.

Which is probably a good thing because if you click those "Conditions apply" links you get shown the dialogue for the ticket conditions for any Anytime Return but with some curious additions:

Booking
A valid passport is required to book.

Not sure I'd be taking my passport on a train from London to Bangor!

Description
Travel is allowed via any permitted route. Break of journey is authorized, as detailed in the ticket restrictions. Anytime Return tickets are valid for outward travel from the date shown on the ticket and within 5 days from that date, and until 04:29 am after the fifth day of validity. The return portion must be used within one calendar month from the start date shown on the ticket. Children (aged 5 to 15 inclusive) are offered 50% discount. Up to two children aged under 5 may travel free of charge with each fare-paying adult. Groupsave discount for small groups between 3 and 9 adults on permitted route and train. Restrictions relatives aux bagages : trains LUMO, 1 sac à main et 1 bagage à main (dimensions maximales 63 x 41 x 27 cm). Trains AVANTI, 1 sac à main et 1 bagage à main (dimensions maximales 30 x 70 x 90 cm).

No idea why this sentence is randomly in French instead of English. I also don't know why it's giving me the dimensions for Lumo trains when I haven't selected any. Then the luggage restrictions it gives for Avanti are wrong. Avanti say you can have three items of luggage, the largest of which cannot exceed 30x70x90cm.
[/quote]

Exchanges: Exchangeable only locally.

I'm not even sure what they mean by that. Only exchangeable in the country of travel maybe?

I've just realised it's also drip pricing. If you search for Matlock to Matlock Bath, it shows the price as £5.16, under the journey select, but then when you select it, the price in the corner changes to £6.90 (for context, two Off Peak Day Singles would be £2.80):

1785309829916.png

This is a dumpster fire.

You cannot put in station codes either.
Attached is a screenshot of no stations found message for the input 'SVG'

What I find most frustrating about this is that it makes the whole sector look bad. Consumers should be able to trust that independent retailers are doing the basics right before sites go live. I would bet money on this being a delegated accreditation rather than anything RDG were involved in, because it'll be an API client integration [seemingly with a long chain of involved parties!], but that's an opportunity for the ultimate license-holder to actually do a thorough job and hold the client to a high standard (ideally, to a higher standard than Rail Delivery Group would assess it to).

Unless you're working with a particularly pragmatic API consumer, you won't win any popularity contests for calling out a sh*t implementation when you see it, but it is crucial somebody does it (really, prior to that frontend going anywhere near production).

Wouldn't say Raileasy gets it right 100% of the time, but the API clients that aren't doing it completely right yet have been told to sort themselves out, and the business monitors & incentivises/enforces that compliance. It benefits both parties as well, because there are fewer complaints when things are communicated properly to users.

That is the case with the new Traveline site too... Very annoying to have to go down through loads of other places to reach the departure station you want...

Head for Points are reporting that Skywards Rail have taken on board customer feedback.

Emirates provided them with this statement:
Following feedback on the launch of Skywards Rail, we wanted to share an update on a few points that have now been addressed.

The booking fee issue has been fixed, the train departure time display bug has now been resolved, and members can access Skywards Rail directly through the Emirates app without needing to download a separate app.

Skywards Rail is also intentionally a redemption-only product, allowing members to spend Miles rather than earn them.

In addition, the fee structure has been improved to better reflect value for members. Several other enhancements, including search and filtering functionality and station display improvements, are currently under review.
I've not had a try to see if it's actually usable yet!

Interesting statement from them. The impression I get is they want to steer people away from redeeming points in their premium cabins - in the last couple of years there have been hikes in redemption prices, carrier surchages, outright removal of the option to redeem in First for those without status and two successive cuts in points issued to American Express UK customers. This is in addition to a hard expiry policy on points accrued.

Still not convinced this website is a worthwhile use of their points so it’s a pass for me, but may be of use to people with small balances to get rid of.
