Just tried it again, but my PC wasn't having it.

Did a Windows diagnostic check just this moment, which told that my PC is correctly configured and that there appears to be something wrong with the website. :-x

I am using an iPad and still no problems.

According to one of the IT people for SCC on twitter it's working again now but evidently it's not since as the posters above cannot access it and nor can I so don't really know what's going on now!

Doesn't work for me now. I guess it will be down forvavwhile if people are attacking it.

So to access the site would the user (i.e you/me/whoever) have to manually change the DNS servers or does the ISP do so (so in my case virgin) when they're informed?

Your ISP will do it automatically. It can take up to 48 hours for ISPs worldwide to update (depends on how often they refresh their domain records)

so for example if railforums.co.uk was pointing at servers at IP Address "1.2.3.4" and the owners moved to a new ISP at IP Address "5.6.7.8" then a transfer would be put in with the regulator (NominetUK for .uk domains) to update the domain "railforums.co.uk" to point at the new IP in the public records. ISPs then fetch the records at regular intervals but until they do users of that ISP will be directed to the old site. Most sites will run old and new side by side for a couple of days to ensure the changeover was successful and avoid interruption of service. Skyscrapercity may not have had that option.

I should add that it's probably more technical then that but that's my understanding of it from owning a domain.

Interesting place isn't it? Gives you a good indication of the general upturn throughout the country. Well, apart from Cornwall. Or Torbay

Discovered the place about a femtosecond before it went down as well. Definitely been back up for the last day or so though.

One way this can be worked around is to use a different DNS server instead of the one operated by your ISP.

I have the DNS settings on my computer (a Mac can bypass the modem's DNS settings) changed from the default to use Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and a backup address of 8.8.4.4) as I've found that they update more often than my IPS's DNS server does and it provides a faster ping/lookup time. There's also OpenDNS which performs a similar service, including an option to have a 'clean feed' without phishing or porn.
I should add that it's probably more technical then that but that's my understanding of it from owning a domain.
It's close enough for this purpose :D

Not just a Mac, it should be possible to edit the "hosts file" on almost any operating system (unless it is 'locked down' of course!). However we'd need to know the new IP address of the SkyScraperCity website! Edit: It's working for me now! 198.41.184.78.

And.... a modem? How quaint! ;)

Well it's been working alright for me and now I got this message image.jpg
Hope it's just a temporary issue but it's annoying when it keeps happening.

Not much you can do. The problem is at their end. You'll just have to wait for it to sort out :)

I would also say you have pretty much got it summed up in that :)

EDIT: There is also the local cache on the user PC and possibly home router too (as by default DNS lookups will go via the home router)

I tried inputting that coded information above and received the following message:-

ERROR 1003

Direct IP access not allowed.

Yeah, it isn't that simplistic unfortunately. What often happens is that one server (i.e. witj one address) will host multiple websites, with the host name specified in the header of the web request. Thus, when you connect to such an address, it doesn't know which website you actually want so puts you onto the default page for that server, in this case an error page :)

I don't think you followed the hosts file link?

This explains that a hosts file is a plain text file containing a list of IP addresses and domains, and its location depends on the operating system you have.

Once this is in place, your computer will be looking at the IP address you specify for the domain, rather than the IP address your ISP tells it to use.

I also wouldn't attempt to edit a hosts file unless you know what you're doing and make a backup though.
