alright guys im new to these forums, im not really into the whole trainspotting or anything but i sketch trains with backgrounds in them etc.
i will post some of my work up soon.
i was just wondering if any one could tell me or pm a place where trains are stopped or parked in the day long enough for me to sketch one out and the background which roughly take around 2 hours for example.
as my old place were i used to sketch them doesnt go there anymore as they were old trains and have now bin taken out of service.

Hi: Looking forward to seeing some of your sketches

A bit of thought from my local area: you can come to Scotland and get some fantastic scenery. There's usually locomotives stabled in Edinburgh Waverley, a few trains sit for a while in Glasgow Central: I don;t know how long it takes to sketch them, but some are in GLC for a couple of hours. Also, if you can see one of the Glasgow depots from a sensible viewplace (particularly Polmadie), a lot of trains seem to be set in a good pose for photos/drawings. Problem there is I can't think of a way of getting a good view legally as I spend most of my time passing Polmadie on trains...

Aberdeen has a few trains (Caly Sleepers and HST sets) in the sidings, but I don't know if there's a good spot to draw from (looks to Jord...). I htink Inverness is decent as well, again I don't know too much.

Airdrie station: the siding's occupied most of the day, but it's usually 320s if you like that :?

Perth and Stirling are the last ones that come to mind: I think a few passenger trains stable in the platforms off-peak times. Looking at Turbostars and Sprinters there.

I apprecaite that I don't know much; I see most of these places from trains passing at high speeds and I have never tried to photograph or draw any (my artistic skills are somewhat lacking...) but if you're ever in Scotland, I hope I've given you some ideas.

Derby? Haven't passed for a few months but always seem to be an engine or two parked up in the "slum" siding opposite platform 6 beyond the goods lines which tend to sit there all day. Actually can't think of that many stations where you do get stuff stabled now...

Could try the Great Central preserved line at Loughborough, on a normal operating day I think you can wander down to the shed where various bits will be lying around, and the diesel fleet tends to be stabled just down from the platforms.

A little out of your area, but Doncaster has a number of trains stabled in the sidings on the far side of platform 8, particularly on Sundays. York normally sees a couple of locos stabled, whereas Hull is a popular stabling point at weekends. Generally, the best time to see stabled trains is on Sunday, when the number of units required to run the service is much lower.

cheers for that chaps , hopefully ill get round to checking most of them.
id appreciate it if people on here could keep me updated with whats stopping where and when so i can hopefully get up there and get it sketched. in the country side if poss as scenery is important.

hmmm stopping and countryside is the tricky bit, as getting access thaere can be harder, some would also argue that the authentic scenery for such engines would be statiosn and industrial style rail yards.......

yeah i do sketch them in sidings , depots etc and then add in the background when i get home, but some authentic contryside would be great so if any one has got any locations were this happens or is possible.
