Skegness - Dronfield 24th July

Hello,

I'm travelling from Skegness to Dronfield (for football) on 24th July, so have started to look at getting the cost down from the £20.85 off peak day return.

So far, the cheapest I have found is splitting via Alfreton, making it £13.2 + £5.50 = £18.70.

Anybody know of a cheaper way?

The route I'll be taking is SKG - NOT departing 1015, arriving 1223, then NOT - DRO dep 1315, arr 1359, then coming back the same way leaving DRO at 1755 (arr NOT at 1833) and NOT at 1845 (arr SKG at 2057).

Im sure Yorkie will correct me if im wrong but by splitting a ticket at Alfreton you would have to travel on a service that stops there and if my geography is correct the trains you would be using would not even pass through. have you tried splitting at Nottingham itself of even Long Eaton?

Alfreton is on the nottingham to chesterfield erwash valley line. Northern stop langley mill, alfreton,chesterfield,dronfield on the service from nottingham to leeds

Yeah, Alfreton is called at on both Nottingham-Leeds and Norwich (Ely)-Liverpool services.

It's amazing the difference in price between a Skegness - Alfreton ticket (£13.20), and one to Chesterfield (£20.65), where there is a 12 minute difference...

There are some very large fare differences to destinations along the line from Nottingham to Sheffield. Although I live closer to Alfreton and Nottingham stations I regularly use Chesterfield station if I am travelling to destinations in Yorkshire or the North West because it is often considerably cheaper.
Moving a little further up the line the difference in prices between Chesterfield and Sheffield are sometimes absolutely unbelievable for just another 12 minutes or so up the line!
An Anytime Return from Chesterfield to York is an amazing £55.50 but from Sheffield it is only £18.80!

Presumably that's an Anytime Return from Chesterfield vs. an Anytime Day Return from Sheffield. Going from Derby to Leeds and beyond for a day trip it's generally much cheaper to split at Sheffield because there aren't any through day returns (I did this recently for a trip to Ilkley), and I guess it's the same from Nottingham.

No it's a full anytime open return (SOR) - actually an Anytime Day Return SHF-YRK is even cheaper at £16.90! I guess the anomaly is due to fares simplification - as Northern's SHF-YRK saver fare had no time restrictions they renamed it to an anytime return (a real simplification), but EMT who controlled the CHD-YRK saver fare stuck a time restriction on it and made it an Off-Peak Return (current fare £21.40), and added a separate exorbitant Anytime Return (the £55.50 fare previously mentioned). It's such a mess the way the TOCs seem to be able to make such arbitrary changes to theoretically regulated fares...

Is Nottingham - Trowell Junction considered part of the Erewash Valley Line?

This anomaly has previously been discussed but I can't seem to find the thread. In fact it was pointed out that it would have been cheaper to get YRK-SHF SOR plus another ticket to have much more validity than YRK-CHD SOR and it would still cost less.

It's not an anomaly IMO, I'd define an anomaly as a ticket from A to C via B being cheaper than A to B! I don't think of split ticketing as anomalies; it's only to be expected!!

York - Dronfield SOR + Dronfield - Chesterfield 7 Day Season is valid on non-stop trains. For someone making 1 return trip (return within 1 week rather than 1 month) at certain 'peak' times, this ticket combination gives a decent saving of around £25 - not bad!

They can't easily do that, as it's regulated . They'd have to do some really sneaky peak restrictions and ticket re-branding, which certain TOCs got away with at "simplification" (which was a con). To do it now it would stand out like a sore thumb and we could alert the media.

It's not that the York-Sheffield flow is so cheap; the problem is York-Chesterfield is so insanely expensive due to (Virgin) CrossCountry policies. The Chesterfield SVR is only a few quid more, and this was completely unrestricted until Virgin introduced their draconian ticket pricing policies.

Sleaford - Norwich is £17.80 for an Off Peak Day Return, whereas a Grantham - Norwich Off Peak Return (no day fare) is £49.40.

I'd imagine so as long as there are no break of journey restrictions on the outbound

Just double-checked, BOJ is allowed on the aforementioned ticket in both directions.
