Singles to / from U1 London

This week I used an off peak single from Reading to U1 London.

I always thought these tickets allowed only one journey on the underground in zone 1, but when I exited at Holborn, the barrier returned my ticket.

Could I have used it for further tube journeys in zone 1?

The barriers probably would have accepted it, but it's not a travel card and you could be accused of fare evasion.

The ticket's validity expired at Holborn, so you could not legitimately have used it for further journeys in Zone 1.

I do not know for certain if it would have worked the gatelines again, it shouldn't do.

LU gatelines usually retain tickets that have no further validity, but gatelines can be programmed to return tickets even if they have no further validity. That doesn't necessarily mean the tickets will open any further gatelines though.

Gateline programming seems so variable. For example my outward Anytime single U1 London to Reading was not accepted by the barriers for entry at London Bridge, nor for exit at Paddington.

I've been using tickets to London U1 (or U12) regularly for the last three years,exiting at a number of tube stations, and I think on every occasion the ticket has been returned to me.
