Single Manned Ticket Offices

The answer is yes, there are very many stations that are staffed by just one person - indeed far too many for us to list here!

Many people seemingly haven't understood the question the OP asked... He asked about stations where there is literally only one person who works there, which is somewhat interesting. Any stations with manning hours longer than 12 hours in a day must surely be disregarded for obvious reasons!

And I don't think there really is a safety issue with this question.

Surely the true answer to this question is there aren't any, as all staff are entitled to holidays which are hopefully covered by somebody else at even the smallest of staffed stations.

That's what makes it somewhat interesting. I imagine there are booking offices which are literally only ever manned by one person, not covered by a GPR CSA and as such only ever open during that one person's rostered hours, so a RDR CSA isn't applicable either. If the resident CSA isn't there, the booking office doesn't open.

No, I don't think you have understood the question. The OP asked about single-manned ticket offices, not stations.

I've done RDR in two areas so I've worked at a few such stations!

Fulwell
Upper Halliford
Hounslow
Sunbury
Hampton Wick
Wandsworth Town
Chertsey
Milford
Witley
Rowlands Castle
Bedhampton
Portchester

They are all single manned in the sense that only one person is based there and other staff only come in to cover rest days and holidays.

I would suggest a fair few of Merseyrail stations, Wallasey Grove Road, Wallasey Village for starters. New Brighton used to have at least 3 station staff during the day as well as a mess room.

If the OP means single manned as only one person works there per day then Ellesmere Port is the only Merseyrail station that falls into this category. All the others operate on a 3 shift basis

You won't find many, if any, were there is literally only one member of staff working at the station. On Northern there are none that I am aware of, as any leave will be covered by another member of staff or not granted (though there are some rare exceptions).

Though surely my subsequent post makes it clearer that I was referring to the booking office when using the term station. I had in mind the vast majority of stations on NR where the only person who could theoretically completely lone 'man' a station would be a booking office clerk/CSA.

Earlswood (Surrey) is one, manned 0630-1030 weekdays only. Bernie is excellent, a real credit to GTR (perhaps the only real credit to GTR!)

Surely there are more single-staffed booking offices than there are with more than one staff? Probably even more unstaffed offices!

Interestingly, Reading West, and I believe Tilehurst, are single-staffed.

There are loads and you can work many of them out easily on the National Rail website - if there's only 1 shift Mon-Fri, it will be single manned.

Congleton is single manned until 1ish by a very helpful fella , we have a clock face timetable of 12 and 26 past the hour, and if you go after the 26past he will always search the best deal for you as he has time to do so .

Bicester North, Haddenham & Thame Parkway, Princes Risborough, Wendover, Great Missenden: all single staffed stations with two shifts.
Aylesbury Vale Parkway, Seer Green, Stoke Mandeville: Single staffed, single shift.

That said, all these stations also have a security guard, but technically they are not railway staff as provided by contractor (Apcoa).

There is only me at Eaglescliffe presently. Redcar Central is single manned by the wonderful Lynda and Chester Le Street has a single person in the ticket office but only with a STAR mobile machine and not a fully functioning ticket machine.

My first railway job was booking clerk at Effingham Junction - yup, it was just me.

Had the pleasure of dealing with Alan Williams on a regular basis. Another regular was Sebastian Coe - he was a Tory MP at the time. One of the most vile, rude, unpleasant, arrogant people I've ever had the misfortune to meet.
