Single Line Working rules question

My question specifically concerns signalling of trains back to the proper line, after travelling along a TCB single line (of a 2-track railway) in the wrong direction. For simplicity, let's assume it's good visibility.

My understanding of the current version of the rules is that unless the pilot travels with every train over the single line in the wrong direction, or a main aspect signal to control wrong direction movements trains back to the proper line from the single line is provided, then a handsignaller must be provided to control movements back to the proper line.

1. I've copied the picture showing the provision of a handsignaller from the current version of the rulebook below. Here, the handsignaller stands opposite the signal on the proper line which protects the crossover. In this instance, the pilot does not need to travel with every train over the single line in the wrong direction. Amongst other details, the pilot (at or opposite GR200) will tell the driver and give details on the RT3193 form that a handsignaller is provided opposite GR204 to control movements back to the proper line. When the driver arrives at the end of the single line section, they will stop at the handsignaller displaying a red hand signal, who will then inform the signaller that the train has arrived complete and get authority from the signaller for the train to proceed back to the proper line. Once authority had been given by the signaller, the handsignaller will show a yellow hand signal and the driver may proceed back to the proper line.

2.Now let's assume the pilot will travel with every train in the wrong direction. I've edited the picture below to remove the handsignaller. Amongst other details, the pilot (at or opposite GR200) will tell the driver and give details on the RT3193 form to stop opposite GR204. The pilot will then get into the cab with the driver. When the driver arrives at the end of the single line section, they will stop opposite GR204. The pilot will leave the train and inform the signaller that the train has arrived complete. The driver will then contact the signaller and get authority to proceed back to the proper line.

3. Finally, let's assume that a signal to control wrong-direction movements back to the proper line is provided. Again, I've edited the picture to show this, below. The pilot (at or opposite GR200) does not have to travel with every train in the wrong direction, but will tell the driver and give details on the RT3193 form to stop at GR404. When the driver arrives at GR404, they will stop and contact the signaller, informing them that their train has arrived complete and request permission to proceed back to the proper line. The signaller will clear GR404 and the driver will proceed back to the proper line (let's assume GR404 controls only this movement, hence no position 1 route indicator).

The whole reasoning behind this question is clarifying the definition of a main aspect signal to control wrong-direction movements returning to the proper line. My understanding of this is 3. above only. Is this correct? I have heard it described that GR204 could be used for this (example 1) without a hand signaller several times recently. I disagree with this as this signal is for movements on the other (obstructed) line in the proper direction. It protects the junction, but it does not control movements over the junction.

As an aside, I accept that example 3. above is quite rare; I can think of three locations of the routes which I sign where such a signal exists, but many more where there is a bi-directional platform line which you normally loop into/out of, but might then be able to make use of a signal like GR404 after travelling much further in the wrong-direction before reaching the bi-directional platform line. Thoughts?

I can’t see a way in which you could use GR204 at all in that first example. How would you even get it to show a proceed aspect if the crossover is reversed beyond it? Also if a driver comes along and sees the signal for another line is off and the points are set for him to cross over to that line I would have thought he’s not going to be heading over the crossover in a hurry.

Really detailed question! The protecting signal on the adjacent line being the end of authority for single line working in the wrong direction on the SL has always been an interesting discussion. It is worth noting that anyone can send this type of question directly to the RSSB and they can provide an official answer, seems like that might be a useful approach for your questions.

So, I've worked in these types of scenario. The locations I've done this at, the crossover is controlled by the crossing keeper (trained signaller) at the request of the controlling PSB signaller.

In the case of example 1 and 2 then yes, the handsignaller is deployed as shown. Before the movement starts the route to return to the correct line should be set.

With regards the pilot (current terminology), then what you don't want is that person wrong-ended if they travel through on every train. That will depend on relative traffic levels.

Example 3 is also correct. This happens at Allington Junction. Because the respective signal there (AL3428) is a main aspect + theatre box then a handsignaller is not required during single line working (SLW). This is part of the signal box special instructions.

As a further aside, to my first paragraph, an interesting anomaly occurs at Claypole (East Coast Main Line). During SLW the handsignaller is deployed as mentioned. However, the level crossing is between the handsignaller and the crossover. Driver's are advised to expect a Yellow from the handsignaller followed by a Green from the crossing keeper (acting as the crossing attendant). It does confuse drivers.

Finally, we are taught not to assume. It can make an Ass of U and Me.

No. A main aspect signal controlling wrong-direction movements returning to the proper line, by definition, must relate to the line that the train's approaching (in the wrong direction) on. The reason is that it provides a clear limit to the authority given by the Pilot - stopping opposite the main aspect signal protecting the crossover on the other line (which signal's that?) or at a less visible shunt signal don't provide that, which is why you need a handsignaller present or the Pilot accompanying all trains to show the driver where to stop.

If GR204 in example 1 did fall within this definition, then you wouldn't need any other rules!

Absolutely correct yes (as far as my understanding goes). It's worth noting also that position light signals are not considered main aspect signals. If they can be worked they should, but would still require a hand signaller/pilot to travel.

If all track circuits are working correctly there is no need for a driver to confirm train complete . If not- - you are unluckyand its degraded working!
If there is a main aspect signal or handsignaller all that is required is the line is clear to 183 m beyond . If the main aspect is cleared and the pilot not aboard the driver does not need to stop. Its not always necessary to stop at the handsignaller if a proceed (yellow) is shown (P1 9.2).
